I ordered online from Blue Pelican Gallery. At the time of my order, the Gallery was up on stilts, being raised due to flooding. Jennifer contacted me and let me know that she couldn't get in her store (safety) at the time and asked me if I wanted a refund or if I wanted to wait until the Gallery was lowered back down. I told her I would be fine with waiting. It wasn't more than a week, but one of the items I had ordered got lost when they lowered the house and the display fell. Jennifer wrote me a note and sent it along with my order explaining that one item had been lost, she sent several replacements, refunded my shipping, and said that she will ship the lost item when she finds it. This woman is BEYOND NICE!!! She has gone above and beyond in making up for the loss of an item that was beyond her control! She is an example of what not only quality customer service, but a quality human being, should be! Thanks Jennifer! I will definitely be recommending and shopping from your store again!

Carolina Creations has beautiful and unusual gifts, especially when you are looking for an elegant, one-of-a-kind wedding or special event present. The local artists are so diverse. I can always find a special keepsake or gift, and the staff are so helpful. It's my favorite shop downtown New Bern.

If you visit Washington, you need to see if there are any events here while you visit. It is an awesome theatre in the heart of downtown. If you are lucky enough to be in town on Thursday or a Saturday, stop by Thursday evenings from 6:30 - 8:30 or Saturday morning at 10 to listen to the Beaufort County Traditional Music Association. It's free and it's the Associations time to play in the round. You can also bring an instrument if you play and join them The music is fantastic. You can come in anytime during their jams. They also have art openings here, movies and musical events. They did an incredible job in refurbishing the theatre - it's just beautiful!

This is an outdoor rain or shine market which gathers under the old live oaks on the courthouse square in the center of Beaufort on Saturday mornings from 8:30 until 1:00. Farmers and fishermen gather under tents filled with fresh, locally grown vegetables, farm-raised meats, eggs, honey and other homegrown products. Bakers share golden, delicious baked goods: croissants, morning buns, tomato pies, cupcakes, quiches, and cookies to name a few. Fishermen offer fresh, locally caught shrimp, fish, crabs, and other seafood. And, artists and craftspeople fill their tents with handmade work from their studios, available for all who appreciate quality, unique creations. Local musicians provide entertainment to those who stop to linger with breakfast or lunch from our weekly food truck, and local non-profit organizations share their work with the public. There's even a Kids' Program with art and other activities for the younger set. Be sure to include the OBFM in your trip to Beaufort.
While family and friends were out at sea participating in a fishing tournament in neighboring Morehead City, I decided to venture across the bridge and explore Beaufort's Farmers Market in search of gifts for upcoming Mother's Day. Not only did I find incredible gifts for all the mothers in my life -- ranging from colorful pottery to freshly roasted coffee beans to homemade cosmetics -- I came away with much more than a few delightful presents. I was struck by the energy of the Beaufort community. The market was bustling with people of all ages -- some who had just finished up a yoga class on the adjacent lawn. I enjoyed talking with the vendors, artists, local growers, bakers and craftspeople as they spoke with passion about their businesses. I even got to shake hands with the Mayor who had just come from a ribbon cutting ceremony for the town's new bridge. The market was ideally located in the heart of town next to the Courthouse. Congrats to the people of Beaufort for doing a great job revitalizing a historic foundation of their community and making it a vibrant part of today’s culture. Although from out of town, I truly was made to feel at home. My only regret was how quickly the morning flew by -- I realized with a jolt at 12:45 pm that I only had 15 minutes left to buy a couple more presents before the 1 pm closing time!

Michelle Johnson Fairchild was on-site and working in her "magic room" as we enjoyed her vibrant paintings and prints just steps away in the front of her small studio. Michelle's personality matches her paintings, and I found her to be an inspiration. The room seemed to give us energy. She was inviting and hospitable, yet respectful of our space and time. Unlike other galleries, many of her pieces are quite affordable. Don't be fooled by the entrance that doesn't fully face the street and appears to be an office. Go down 8th Street a few steps from Arendell and you'll be there.

One can enjoy this destination purely as a museum of mostly local artists. There are a number of pieces from locales distant as well as historical pieces. Styles and media vary. There is also a collection of fine estate jewelry. It is a bit of a rabbit warren; the gallery extends far back and has a number of paths and side rooms for your viewing pleasure. Prices vary; you can drop a significant amount of cash here but the art quality is excellent.
