Walk along Cape Fear, see the Battleship, US Coast Guard, stroll through the streets & visit historical places & shops, explore amazing book stores & beautiful old buildings & restaurants. So much to see & enjoy here...great food, beautiful town & you may even want to take a river cruise or a horse & carriage ride, but definitely take the walk. Parking can be difficult...I recommend visiting the Cotton Exchange, park there & parking is validated with a purchase--there's so much to see & do inside the Cotton Exchange, quaint shops & good food. If you're interested in the "haunts" of Wilmington...The Cotton Exchange is a great place to explore the paranormal. There's several haunts & information is provided within.

Lake Phelps

Reviewed By maas_johnf - Raleigh, United States

The lake is the second largest in North Carolina after Lake Mattamuskeet. It is fairly shallow (nine feet at its deepest), and no one has discovered how it stays filled as their are no inlets. But it is the site of the spawning of the River Herring, which the state is trying to reestablish. While we were there we saw hundreds of tundra swans and some hooded merganser ducks at the lake's Cypress Point.

Monitor National Marine Sanctuary

Monitor National Marine Sanctuary was designated the nation's first national marine sanctuary in 1975. The site protects the wreck of the USS Monitor, a Civil War vessel that fought in the Battle of Hampton Roads on March 9, 1962, and sank off the North Carolina coast on New Year’s Eve 1862. Today, the Monitor lies 240 feet below the ocean surface and provides habitat structure to a variety of corals and sponges, along with transitory organisms, such as sea turtles, sharks, and manta rays. Divers on the wreck can also see crabs, brittle stars, sea urchins, snapping shrimp, spiny lobster, and a variety of fish, such as black sea bass, snapper, and grouper. Go back in time in Monitor National Marine Sanctuary and learn more about our nation's fascinating maritime history and heritage.
