New York State has it all – booming metropolises, majestic waterfalls, mountains, wine country, chicken wings. Yes, NYC is a magnet for tourists, but an exploration of the rest of the state can be equally thrilling. The Finger Lakes Wine Region is a vision of serene waters, quaint B&Bs, and pretty vineyards. Movie buffs will love Rochester, home of the George Eastman House and one of the world’s most comprehensive film archives. On your way to Niagara Falls, stop in Buffalo to fuel up on spicy wings.

Mountain range in southeast New York that attracts rock climbers, hikers and bikers.
You have to get there early or you can not access the parks. The trails are nice. Bring 4 bottles of water if hiking Sams point you will need it.

We were only able to hike one trail in the Adirondacks and were glad we chose this one. This is a fun and rocky trail with a 1811 ft elevation gain over 2.5 miles one way, and quite a bit of rock scramble in the steeper top third part of the hike. Trail was fairly well marked most of the way, except for close to the top when you encounter a big boulder and it was confusing as to how best to go around and over it. This was where the blaze markings should be clearer to show the best route to take as we saw several groups of hikers having trouble figuring it out. The summit area is expansive and completely bald with large smooth patches of rocks. The view is amazing, truly 360 degrees of lush mountains and lakes. A most rewarding short hike for such spectacular scenery. It could get suddenly windy up there so if you plan to hang out for a while best to bring something warm. We hiked on a Friday morning and the trail wasn't crowded - at the summit there were at most about 10 people.

At 6 millions acres, there is no larger park except Denali in Alaska; it just doesn't have the verticality (largest peak is only around 5,000 ft.). The vast expanse of lakes and trails is perfect to be enveloped in beauty. Definitely book early and avoid black fly season in early summer. From tents, to camper, to motel, to beautiful lodge, all options are on the table for you.

Excellent time hiking with my wife and two grown boys and future daughter in-law. Easy hike, beautiful trail with several great views along the way. Great views at top also. Went earlier in the morning, were the only ones on top for at least 30 minutes. Trail was very busy on way down. Many people hiking up.

Did the peak climb with our family, including our teenage children who have done ADK peaks before. This is a tough climb ... lots and lots of rocks and several steep sections. Make sure you wear good hiking shoes and bring lots of water. We arrived later in the morning so also had to park away from the LOJ which added about 1 hour total to the hike. The views at the peak are amazing and worthwhile, but just be ready for a long hike up and going down will be just a challenging and no quicker given all the rocks.

Whiteface may have made its name in winter, it has the highest vertical drop in the east, after all but it does summer pretty well too. The warmer months make Whiteface a natural setting for outdoor enthusiasts of all levels and ages, whether you're looking for an adrenaline rush or just an afternoon of beautiful views with your family. Take a hike along the Stag Brook Falls trail or Bear Den Mountain, play a round of Disc Golf and check out the area's most exhilarating, challenging Mountain Biking terrain. Or gather the family for an afternoon of taking it all in with a Scenic Cloudsplitter Gondola Ride to the summit of Little Whiteface. Drive the Whiteface Veteran's Memorial Highway to the summit, and lean into the Adirondack breeze as you marvel at the world below you. This well-known mountain offers exciting and scenic runs for skiers of all levels: Beginners do well on Easy Acres, which features its own ski school, novices and intermediates enjoy Little Whiteface, while experts head to the heart-pounding summit.
We drove up the veterans highway to the top. Although with Covid the castle and other areas were not open we were able to park and take amazing photos. It was a great drive and the views were spectacular.
