Things to do in New York City, New York (NY): The Best Transportation

June 4, 2021 Stefan Strunk

Conquering New York in one visit is impossible. Instead, hit the must-sees – the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, Central Park, the Metropolitan Museum of Art – and then explore off the beaten path with visits to The Cloisters or one of the city’s libraries. Indulge in the bohemian shops of the West Village or the fine dining of the Upper West Side. The bustling marketplace inside of Grand Central Station gives you a literal taste of the best the city has to offer.

Staten Island Ferry

The Ferry operates between the St. George Ferry Terminal on Staten Island and the Whitehall Terminal in Lower Manhattan. The trip is about 25 minutes long. The Ferry is free. The St. George Terminal is located at 1 Bay Street, Staten Island. The Whitehall Terminal is located at 4 South Street, Manhattan. Passengers using wheelchairs are encouraged to use lower-level boarding at both the Whitehall and St. George Terminals. All passengers are required to comply with applicable U.S. Coast Guard Security Regulations regardless of which level they board from. The Staten Island Ferry does not carry cars.

A must of course for a fantastic free view of NYC...but do homework before you plan your time of travel....some ferries are closed decks and some are open....which is much better for photos and experience so check out on board in Whitehall terminal which are open and times of travel.

WOW! Took the return ferry trip from Wall Street Pier to Rockaway Beach. Only $2.75 e/w and just the most stunning trip. Sailed past Governors Island, views across NY harbour, through the Narrows, past Coney Island to beautiful Rockaway Beach. A courtesy bus was waiting to take people to Riis Park A great break from the city and a chance to see more of New York. Loved every minute. There are several other ferry routes at the same price.

PATH

Reviewed By moogul818 - New Delhi, India

Port Authority Trans-Hudson (PATH) is a 22 odd km rapid transit system connecting the north-eastern New Jersey cities of Newark, Harrison, Hoboken, and Jersey City with Lower and Midtown Manhattan. It is operated as a wholly owned subsidiary of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. In Manhattan and near the New Jersey riverfront the trains remain underground; farther west they run in open cuts, at grade level, and on elevated track. However the thrill in riding the PATH lies in the fact that its tracks cross the Hudson River through century-old cast iron tubes that rest on the river bottom under a thin layer of silt. I almost missed its Christopher street station on way to Pier 45 on the Hudson, if was not for the stream of people exiting in and out of a quaint archway. A ride on the PATH across the Hudson must be on your itinerary. Need more information on the PATH? you will find down at the station just before you step on to the platform.
