Sydney’s best kept secret The Brett Whiteley Studio was the workplace and home of Australian artist, Brett Whiteley (1939–92). The artist bought the former warehouse in 1985 and converted it into a studio and exhibition space. He lived there from 1987 to 1992, the year he died in Thirroul. The visitor is offered the unique opportunity to experience the atmosphere of the space – the studio with his unfinished paintings, art equipment and collections of reference books, and the graffiti wall covered with quotes and images. The living area has memorabilia such as photographs, objects, postcards, furniture, his music collection and sketchbooks. The gallery has changing exhibitions of the artist’s works: paintings, drawings, sculpture and graphics borrowed from the Brett Whiteley Studio Collection, Art Gallery of New South Wales and private collections. There is a small gallery shop with postcards, posters and other merchandise for sale. There is no cafe at the Studio, however visitor
This smaller Sydney gallery space never disappoints. It showcases works by the artist, whose diverse materials and techniques include painting, drawing, sculpture, mixed media and printmaking. The upstairs studio space has been preserved, so visitors can get a sense of some of Whitely's passions and influences as well as his studio set-up and practice. Exhibitions change yearly, sometimes more frequently, and are curated around the artist's major preoccupations and themes. Currently, Whiteley's love of his home and its setting in Sydney's Lavender Bay with its views across the harbour and lush maritime environment are on display. For people with an interest in art, Whitely's Studio is an absolute gem and a must.

The Art Gallery of New South Wales acknowledges the traditional custodians of the country on which it is located, the Gadigal of the Eora nation, and recognises their continuing connection to land, waters and culture. From its magnificent site in Sydney, the Art Gallery of NSW is one of Australia’s flagship art museums and the state’s leading visual arts institution. Our mission is to serve the widest possible audience as a centre of excellence for the collection, preservation, documentation, interpretation and display of Australian and international art, and a forum of scholarship, art education and the exchange of ideas.
Open daily and free entry, the gallery houses impressive collections of classic and contemporary Australian, Asian and Aboriginal paintings, photographs, drawings and sculptures. European masters also are well represented. Interesting and informative schedule of free guided tours, as well as presentations and discussion groups. The restaurant and comfortable coffee shop are good value too.

Showcasing modern Chinese art from the current century, the White Rabbit Gallery offers four floors of diverse works and free film screenings, as well as a relaxing tea house on the ground floor. The gallery is open Wednesday through Sundays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Every time we visit Sydney we include a visit to White Rabbit as they change their exhibition twice a year and the collection of Chinese contemporary art is just superb.

We were so fortunate to have Rose Lovelock ( indigenous uni lecturer) explain the use of and history/ cultural context associated with the items on display which was so incredibly educational. Especially for me from NZ but no less for my Ozzie husband. In particular the tribal language groups map on the wall was astounding - the historical complexity and organisation of the first peoples is breathtaking. The damage heartbreaking. This should be the number To Do!

Set in beautiful grounds the gallery/cottage allows one to fully experience a sense of the life and works of this great Australian artist. We stayed in the cabin on the property which was clean, comfortable and with every amenity one would need. The staff were courteous, helpful and very knowledgeable and passionate about their work. The whole stay was very reasonable and overnight included admission to the gallery and a voucher for the lovely cafe which is also on the property, serving delicious breakfasts and lunches. Centrally located, it is a very good launching point to see other attractions that the Blue Mountains have to offer.

Grew up locally and back visiting family we made the short scenic drive out to Bowraville to visit the museum and grab lunch at the lovely old local pub. Museum was great value at $5ea and host was very welcoming and knowledgeable. Range of local and period items on display were really interesting and well layed out. Interactive highlight was trying a ladies side saddle ( seen it on tv - downton abbey - and always wondered how on earth they didn't fall off and break their necks.) If you are in town take a wander too and visit some off the little stores. We found some lovely hand made items. These great little historic towns need visitors to keep them ticking along. We had a great value tasty meal at the towns pub which is a beautiful old building with detailed woodwork and pressed tin ceilings and great beer garden out the back.
