Things to do in New Jersey, United States: The Best Scenic Walking Areas

October 20, 2021 Elouise Mccaul

Whether you are looking for sun-drenched beaches or outdoor activities in beautiful countryside, New Jersey has plenty to offer. Those who love the great outdoors should head for the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, which runs along the Delaware River for forty miles. Here you can go rock climbing, canoeing, kayaking or fishing, or simply admire the stunning waterfalls. There is a huge range of hiking trails to choose from as well as historic sites to visit. In winter, you can enjoy cross-country skiing near Blue Mountain Lakes, and birdwatchers might be lucky enough to catch sight of bald eagles. If you are looking for a change, visit one of New Jersey's eleven lighthouses that are open to public, such as the one in Cape May. For art and history enthusiasts, New Jersey State Museum in Trenton has historic artifacts and American fine art from the nineteenth century to the present day as well as a Planetarium.

This view never gets old. We only get to visit here every couple years but visitors that come to NYC never get to see this spectacular view of the city from Hoboken. After a great meal in Hoboken, this was a great walk to end a wonderful evening. The city of Hoboken has done a great job with this river walk.

Historic Walnford

My wife and I decided to take a ride from our house in Somerset County NJ and check out Historic Walnford in Monmouth County NJ. I must say, we were plesently surprised. We were the only ones there at the time so we started looking through the open buildings which included a grist mill, smoke house, information/bathroom barn and a main house. We started walking up to the main house when the park ranger opened the door and gave us a full tour. The house is meticulously kept and is extremely interesting especially since the house was in the family for a very long time. The park ranger knows all about the house and gave us a wonderful personal tour. It is a beautiful house full of history and is meticulously kept. The grounds are beautiful and we enjoyed walking between the buildings even thought it was 25 degrees out. You can also walk around the inside of the 3 story grist mill which is really interesting. There are heated restrooms on the property and there is also a nice winery nearby. We will definitely be going back when it gets warmer. Check it out, it's really a hidden gem.

Brick Reservoir

Reviewed By GoFishGirl - Point Pleasant, United States

I've been going to the Brick Reservoir for years to have a quick jog or walk. It's one of the nicest places around. It's got a paved open pathway all the way around, plentiful parking at two different lots and lots of beautiful scenery to keep your mind off your exercise. There are even water stations and dog cleanup supplies if you forget your stuff. It's always nicely landscaped and perfectly clean. Kudos to Brick Township for maintaining such a lovely spot.

Jakes Branch County Park

This is not your average county park. The nature center made learning about the various elements and people of the Pine Barrens so interesting and was set up to reach the minds of children's and adults. I also learned a lot about fire fighting in the Pine Barrens. The staff was very hospitable and even went out of their way to find an answer to my question about charcoal and where it actually came from. I was super impressed with the observation tower and the beautiful and expansive views.

Barnegat Branch Trail

Reviewed By KathleenP948 - Spring Lake, United States

The Barnegat Branch Trail from Barnegat to Lacey is very well maintained and close to eight feet wide in most spots. Some sections run through wooded areas, it feels as thought you’re miles away from anything even though Route 9 is very close. The grade is flat and makes for an enjoyable walk, run or ride.

Great place to walk and bird watch. Eagles are commonly seen, and start to gather materials for their nests this month. Boardwalk over wetlands that harbor wild rice. A wonderful place to explore on weekend walks.
