Eagle Lake

Nevada lake named for its large amount of eagles.

Totally credit a blogger I read who said get there by 9 AM - we drive back about noon past miles and miles of bumper to bumper cars. I’m not fit and have chronic headaches so I found the grade a bit tough a couple times but with good shoes and a few rests - we all made it. Fill out the permit at the base of the walk - there was no cost but there is a point past the falls that you are required to have it. The lake is well worth the effort and we walked around to the backside of the lake and enjoyed a spectacular view.

We planned the tour at the beginning of our trip so we would have an idea of where we might want to return. The tour was more fun and informative than we ever imagined. It was literally one of the best parts of our trip! Jim was an amazing guide.

Skunk Harbor

Reviewed By lkbashor - Carson City, United States

This spot on Tahoe has ahhhmazing breathtaking views, dog friendly beach access for everyone and is truly a hike to a hidden gem that you won't soon forget!! Skunk Harbor not only combines all of these wonderful attributes but also throws in a bit of history for you to check out too! Parking is FREE but limited, located at a turnoff along HWY 28 about a few miles north of the Spooner/HWY 50 junction - look for an old green pipe gate which is also the entrance to the trailhead (do NOT park in front of gate, you WILL be fined). After you park, grab your gear (keep in mind there are NO facilities - take out what you take in). Travel along the old dirt road on the other side of the green gate through the Tahoe forest. When you reach the fork in the road you have 2 choices: left fork leads to Prey Meadows which is blanketed with many varieties of wildflowers in the spring anddd right fork leads you to Skunk Harbor. Throughout your hike down to Skunk Harbor take in the breathtaking picture worthy views all around. Upon your arrival to the beach be sure to find the historical remants of an old railroad ramp used to supply timber to Virginia City after the Comstock Lode plus an abandoned stone house along the waters edge with historical markers from the 1920s that belonged to the wealthy family of George Newhall built as a summer house here for vacations and parties. Everything was brought in by boat, during the Roaring Twenties ~ WOW!! This is a MUST DO!! Hike is roughly 3 miles round trip, I always enjoy an adventure / hike with a reward at the end, Skunk Harbor not only has this throughout but pays off at the end. Be prepared for a bit of workout on the way back out as it is uphill and can be exposed depending on time and season/weather. So bring plenty of H20 and take your time but this hidden gem is worth it!!

Lake Mohave

Located between the Hoover and Davis Dams, the lake's 237 miles of shoreline, plus the area's usually sunny weather, provide ample opportunity for boating, swimming, scuba diving, fishing or just relaxing on the beach.

Where else can you kayak under the full moon and be serenaded by wild burros and coyotes. Only in the Mohave Desert within the Lake Mead National Rec area of Lake Mohave. I kayak regularly from Davis Dam, Katherines Landing, Telephone Cove, Princess Cove, Cabinsite Cove, Carp Cove, Pot Cove, Cottonwood Cove, Willow Beach and the list goes on. Always a beautiful paddle. I often swim under the newly re-established beach at Katherines where they have Dive-in movies in the summer. Check out their schedule. Lake Mohave even has accommodations for boaters with disabilities. Yes, there are restroom on the lake that have ADA accessibility. Always be cautious of the wind. I check NOAA before going out and pay attention to the flag warnings at Katherines. Sometimes the flags are not quickly handled at other coves. When kayaking be cautious of the boaters and wave runners that do not abide by no wake zones and staying there distance. Please pack it in, pack it out. I seem to have a never ending job of trying to clean up others trash each time we are out.

First you go and get your tribal pass for day use. For seniors it was 10 dollars. Then we drove around the lake and looked at all the great tuffus, the fishermen on their ladders which was a kick to see. Went until the pavement stopped turned around and went the other way. In Nixon is the Visitors Center. A must see. Explains the area you are looking out. The history and very nicely layed out. Then went out to Marble Bluff Dam. Had our picnic lunch there. Nice picnic tables and a small area to look out at the Truckee river. Then talked to the Fish and Game about the operation there. Was great.

Coolest little find on the way through to Utah. Low foot traffic on hiking trails, beautiful scenery, perfect ratio of shade to blazing sun while hiking. Did the cave lake lookout trail with my partner and our little dog on leash since they’re pet friendly. Another surprise worth noting was the pot pit at the trail head was SUPER clean and you could actually breathe a pleasant scent and not have to hold your breath....so extra points for that.
