Known as the safari capital of Africa, Nairobi is an energetic, modern city that serves as a fascinating introduction to both wildlife and nightlife. Music clubs pulse with life, shops and markets bustle, and a mélange of restaurants will tempt your palate in this former Maasai watering hole. Top sights include the Karen Blixen Museum, Giraffe Centre and the black rhinos of Nairobi National Park. The compact city center is safe to walk in and taxis make other areas accessible.

It’s a lovely park - lots of rhino, buffalo, Rothschild giraffe. But a clean up needs to happen. There is lots of rubbish around the shoreline which should be cleaned up and we saw lots of dead flamingos and pelicans. In the past, tourists have flocked to see the countless flamingos on the lake. The lake is being polluted by run off from factories from Nakuru and it seems that is killing the birds. If that isn’t sorted out soon, people may stop coming.

I was hesitant about a guided tour and having someone plan our vacation for us in Kenya, but I could not have asked for a better experience. I was lucky enough to find the African Thrillist, if not I'd be lost. Our experience was both authentic and tailored to our needs. Just an outstanding experience. We spoke before our trip to Kenya about what I was interested in, my budget, special needs/diets etc, and generally just to get a sense of who I was what I liked. Then a couple of days later the African Thrillist developed an AMAZING itinerary that met all of our needs: Safari, urban experiences, and beach time with in 10 days. All at a very reasonable price. The whole time our guide and organizer (Raisa, the founder of the African Thillist) was accommodating, communicative, friendly (all smiles all the time), and super organized. The first part of our trip started in Nairobi, a city tour guided by the African Thrillist that included an elephant orphanage, the giraffe center, skyline views and other major sites, and a wonderful authentic Kenyan dinner. I could not have asked for a better way to start our trip. Second part was a luxury 3-day safari, organized completely by the African Thrillist with an amazing driver/safari guide. Her staff and contractors are held to the same high-level standards that she holds herself. I cannot stress enough how safe, convenient, relaxing, and educational the safari was, on top of being the coolest experience of my life. We saw leopards, lions, cheetahs, elephants, zebras, giraffes, hippos, baboons, secretary birds, crocodiles, and much more. Next stop was Mombasa, again with a guide and driver who was extremely professional, knowledgeable and friendly, and also arranged by the African Thrillist. They know how to pick their people. The day was full of unique experiences to Mombasa (old town, Fort Jesus, Haller Park) wrapped up with dinner and drinks. We explored so much of Mombasa in that day. And again: we were in good hands the hold time with a driver/guide that really knew his way around the city. Final stop was Diani for beach time. Beautiful crystal clear water and the softest sand you've ever set foot on, we wrapped up with time in paradise with one of the best dinners of my life at Ali Barbour, a restaurant in a literal cave with a natural opening so you can dine under the stars! Everything was thought of and taken care of. We felt safe and comfortable the whole time. We learned a lot but also relaxed. I can't think of a better way to see Kenya!

In June, 2019 I sent emails to eight different Mombasa safari tour companies. Not only was Faith Chebet of Kenya Tru Nomads Tours the first to respond, her email answered the three basic questions in my initial email. Several of the other tour operators never responded and the others responded with basically a generic email that required me to then send them another one with my same basic questions. After I finally received pricing information from the other ones, and Faith sent that to me right away, I was able to compare. I liked how complete and detailed Faith’s quotes were (and she also helped me narrow down which park made the most sense given our constrained time frame), and decided to book our overnight safari with Kenya Tru Nomads for when our cruise ship was going to be docked for two days in Mombasa in November, 2020. Via CruiseCritic I ended up getting 25 other cruise passengers that were interested in doing the overnight safari. Faith communicated very efficiently and quickly with me and we all paid our minimal deposit via PesaPal (Africa’s version of PayPal, I think). I continued to email Faith because passengers would come up with different questions that they needed answered. Faith always responded quickly and thoroughly. Fast forward to March and April, 2020 and many passengers decided to cancel the cruise because of the coronavirus concerns. I was sending Faith many cancellation emails and I was hearing back from the passengers that they were getting their deposits refunded within a week. Finally, in mid-May, 2020 the cruise was canceled because of COVID-19 and the rest of us had to request our deposits be refunded. Once again, all of them were refunded to us, without issues or hassle, within one week. I am so sad that I will not be able to go on the safari in Mombasa. If the safari itself was anything like Faith‘s communication skills and thoroughness, we are going to miss a wonderful tour. So, I can’t actually review the tour, but as someone who has put many small group tours together for cruise ship passengers, Faith was a pleasure to work with and the most professional tour company person I ever dealt with. I am very sorry that I will not get to actually meet her or Kenya Tru Nomads employees in November and I am praying that the people and economy of Mombasa are able to withstand COVID-19.

With a day to spend in Kenya...on New Year’s Day at that...I was hoping to enjoy they beginning of a new year at the Nairobi National Park and Giraffe Centre. Huge thanks to Mr. Dicky for making this possible. He was indeed quite helpful with booking. I received prompt responses and all of my inquiries were answered with no complaints. It’s important to note that I am very indecisive but Mr. Dicky was quite patient with me throughout the entire process. Thank you. About the tour: my flight got in at 5:30am and I was super pleased to meet my guide as soon as I walked out of Arrivals. I didn’t have to stand around lost, one of my fears for this trip, being that I didn’t have a local SIM card to make any calls. Thankfully, all went well. I came out and there was my name. After meet up, we started the tour where I spent about 12 hours between both parks and lunch. Time wise alone, I definitely got my money’s worth as I didn’t expect the tour to be that long. The price with the fact that it was only me on the tour, I have no complaints. At the national park I was able to see lions, giraffes, rhinos and a few other animals whilst getting the best pictures. The driver was a God-sent. He drove and drove and drove. Made sure I saw as much of everything possible, even when I was getting a bit sleepy and he could’ve easily called it a day. Additionally, when my battery was about to die, he was quite helpful finding somewhere for me to charge my phone. I gave up on charging but he made sure I had enough battery life to continue taking pictures and to take me through the rest of my trip. Thank you! Throughout the tour Mr. Dicky made sure to call to check-in. From pick up, then at various times whilst on tour. This was unexpected, but I thoroughly appreciated it being that I dealt with him during booking and had no correspondence with driver prior. This simple act provided a sense of comfort. Later on during the trip, I ended up having to pay the entrance fee for the giraffe centre. I was unaware that I had to do so and again I greatly appreciated Mr. Dicky speaking to meet directly about that. He could’ve simply told the driver to relay the message. He took the time to explain and make sure I was ok with it. Bless you. About the giraffe centre: it was quite nice, but I could’ve done without it as it was a bit crowded. That could’ve been because of the date I visited. Of course this bit of dissatisfaction had nothing to with KT & Safaris as they simply took me where I wanted to go. And I specifically requested the centre. If I had to re-do, I would skip it. The giraffes were absolutely lovely and seemed to be well cared for, it was just the crowding I disliked. All in all, it was a great experience. Very professional and efficient. Communication was A1; even after the tour Mr. Dicky checked in to make sure I was satisfied with the service. I highly recommend the company and I will definitely use them again on my next trip where I plan to bring my 9yr old to Kenya. Thank you K T & Safaris for allowing me to have the experience I envisioned and then some.
