Things to do in Mostar, Herzegovina-Neretva Canton: The Best Day Trips from

August 2, 2021 Merry Kessler

Mostar (Serbo-Croatian pronunciation: [mǒstaːr]) is a city and municipality in southern Bosnia and Herzegovina. Inhabited by 105,797 people, it is the most important city in the Herzegovina region, its cultural capital, and the center of the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton of the Federation. Mostar is situated on the Neretva River and is the fifth-largest city in the country. Mostar was named after the bridge keepers (mostari) who in the medieval times guarded the Stari Most (Old Bridge) over the Neretva. The Old Bridge, built by the Ottomans in the 16th century, is one of Bosnia and Herzegovina's most recognizable landmarks, and is considered one of the most exemplary pieces of Islamic architecture in the Balkans.

My fiancé and I had such a good time with Jakov!! His knowledge of Croatian history and the surrounding countries was unbelievable, and he weaved in interesting stories and little facts as we strolled along in Samobor or drove through the beautiful vineyards. There was never a moment that wasn’t fun! He has such a great sense of humor and his passion for leading tour guides is wonderful. It’s clear he has so much experience as a tour guide and really is so great at what he does. We felt like we could’ve been old friends with him by the end of the day, and we’re so glad we had this opportunity. It was definitely the highlight of our stay in Zagreb!!

My 18 year old daughter and I had the privilege of spending an afternoon with Vedad on the Bosnian War tour. We were so very impressed with Vedad's ability to remain objective despite personal lived experience as a young child in the war. He shared some personal stories, spoke about the history of the region as well as the current political state, and expressed hope for the future. He was incredibly knowledgeable and invited questions and dialogue. This tour advanced my perspective and I am truly grateful for the gifts Vedad gave through his passion, humanity, and hope. Best to you as always Vedad...K and A

We went on a walking tour with Emir, “Experience with Local, feel like a local”. We didn’t go to one museum or church/mosque and didn’t even go to the old bridge, but feel like we know the city, understand the history and what the people think, do and want. Emir’s sharing of his family’s personal experiences during the Last War were stirring and helped us understand what the city and its people went through. Emir greeted and introduced us to many of his friends as we toured the city and we had coffee at his neighborhood cafe/bar. We highly recommend this walking tour with Emir if he’s available.

In company of a local guide visit the most interesting sites in Herzegovina in just one day: join a 7-hour trip to 3 important cities in the region and visit a beautiful waterfall. * Blagaj * Zitomislici * Pocitelj * Kravice In Blagaj and in the Christian Orthodox monastery of Žitomislići we will answer all the questions on cultural and religious heritage of the days bygone. In Počitelj we will klimb the narrow street of this well preserved medieval fortification and have a 360 view of the river Neretva valley. At the end the Kravice cascades will offer both beautiful scenery and the thrill of swimming beneath one of the most beautiful world's wonders. The tour is well balanced offering culture, history, tradition and natural beauty all in one. Whitout big clames we think that 7 hours to visit 4 places is the right balance to experience Herzegovina in one day and still have some little energy left to enjoy Mostar in the evening hours.

Inclusions: Driver/guide, Live commentary on board, Local guide, Hotel pickup (selected hotels only), Transport by air-conditioned minivan

Exclusions: Food and drinks, Gratuities, Entrance fees (Blagaj 2,5€pp and Kravice falls 5€pp)

Without spoiling anything, as we approached the town of Jablanica nested between mountains and on the river Neretva, our guide Miran sprang into a dramatic retelling of the local partisan history led by Tito - explaining all the factions, all of the moving parts, and bringing this important slice of the 20th century to life. Miran's historical knowledge, passion, and interesting perspectives were present throughout the full tour, and we will be recommending iHouse to friends who plan on visiting Mostar. As well as his encyclopedic knowledge of the events, Miran is just a really nice, funny guy who instantly made us feel at ease; he went above and beyond to talk us through the tour, but also was a great conversationalist who gave us a local's perspective on cultural life, film, and music of the former Yugoslavia - and even followed up with an email of the things we discussed. Now, the ARK Bunker: this is one of the few facilities (and probably the only working one) in the world that you can actually visit. It's claustrophobic, eerie, and fascinating. An excellent local guide will walk you through the bunker itself, and the existential strangeness of the location is definitely something to be experienced. We felt that we had learned so much by the time this tour came to a close, and we're planning to also take the Death of Yugoslavia tour offered by Miran and iHouse, which we're sure will also be excellent.
