November 25, 2021 Karren Gelb

Mossel Bay is a harbour town of about 130,000 people on the Southern Cape (or Garden Route) of South Africa. It is an important tourism and farming region of the Western Cape Province. Mossel Bay lies 400 kilometres east of the country's seat of parliament, Cape Town (which is also the capital city of the Western Cape Province), and 400 km west of Port Elizabeth, the largest city in the Eastern Cape Province. The older parts of the town occupy the north-facing side of the Cape St Blaize Peninsula, whilst the newer suburbs straddle the Peninsula and have spread eastwards along the sandy shore of the Bay.

Seabird and Penguin Rehabilitation Centre

Reviewed By Jilldutoit - Port Elizabeth, South Africa

A visit to this sanctuary is a must when visiting Mossel Bay - its a bit off the beaten track as its on the road out to MossGas, but even without a GPS, we found it without any problem! The work done here is quite humbling to see and what is heart warming is that Carol knows each bird by name and they all have unique personalities and idiosyncrasies! Many of the injured birds unfortunately won't be able to be released back into the wild, as that is the best case scenario for all the birds that end up here, but there are permanent "residents" whose quality of life is pretty good. Each bird is carefully monitored and assessed and breeding in captivity is happening. It is essential to phone to make a booking before visiting ... going at feeding time is possibly best! As no goverment funding is available for this outreach, reliance on public generosity is key for the continued successful functioning of this wonderful facility.

St. Blaize Trail

We walked this trail at least once a week. If in the Mossel bay area, its a must do. You can decide how far you want to go, but comfortable walking shoes, water and a hat is necessary. Not for totally unfit walkkers or small children. Pinnacle clubhouse is about half way to Dana bay. You can alsa stop your walk there. Good facilities at the clubhouse. For advice phone +27828039342

Smile, we have had the most amazing experience diving with 2, two meter Smooth Hound Sharks, was a tick off my bucket list, Love their names, Bonny and Bean, the staff was very hands on and pleasant, the octopus Paddy gave us a beautiful display playing in the open undersea tank, the clown fish are beautiful and we can see a lot of love goes into looking after each fish and sea life in this mini aquarium. When we visit again i am definitely making this a yearly stop. Kind regards Riemer Family
