A wildlife reserve that offers visitors walking trails and kayak tours through salt marshes and tidal flats.
We enjoyed our drive to see various areas of the Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve. Its fun to also see the birds and sea animals.

Great beach, very wide and very clean. Also very dangerous waves; you can watch the waves churning around in all directions. Definitely not a place for swimming! Great beach for walking and birdwatching! Not too many people and a bit windy on Thanksgiving afternoon. We love watching birds and between the birds in the slough / river inlet as well as along the shoreline and birds in the dunes it’s a great place to watch birds as well as whales just offshore! The parking is easy and plenty; no facilities and not accessible since you either walk over the dunes or can walk along the slough trail.

There a couple of whale watching boats and eco tours through the Elkhorn Slough. You can walk around the harbor area, harbor entrance and along the beach and see lots of sea otters, sea lions and harbor seals as well as many different types of birds. This is a great area to wonder around and watch wildlife. It is also considerable less crowded than areas in and immediately around Monterey only 15 mi away.
