Things to do in Moscow, Central Russia: The Best Sights & Landmarks

January 26, 2022 Marianna Hollaway

The political, scientific, historical, architectural and business center of Russia, Moscow displays the country's contrasts at their most extreme. The ancient and modern are juxtaposed side by side in this city of 10 million. Catch a metro from one of the ornate stations to see Red Square, the Kremlin, the nine domes of St. Basil's Cathedral, Lenin's Mausoleum, the KGB Museum and other symbols of Moscow's great and terrible past, then lighten up and shop Boulevard Ring or people watch in Pushkin Square.

Our Lady of Smolensk Novodevichy Convent

Located near the Moscow River, this peaceful retreat from the bustling city includes a spectacular 16th-century convent and a cemetery where many of the country's most famous writers, poets, politicians and public figures are buried.

From the almost endless supply of tourist sites and places of interest in Moscow, the city of Moscow offers the visitors a wonderful site known as the "Our Lady of Smolensk Novodevichy Convent" which, in my humble opinion, is in the "opening quintet" of the sites that are absolutely mandatory to visit. Although over the past few years, including our days, parts of the convent are not open to the public because of the renovation and reconstruction works done by UNESCO, partial tours that are open to the public are not to be missed. The richness and splendor sprouting throughout the complex are incredible and must to be visited. The cemetery adjacent to the monastery site where many famous personalities from all walks of life of Russia / the Soviet Union are buried, is also an amazing tourist gem worth a visit on its own.

Church of St. Nicholas

My hotel is abut a mile away but Spar is the largest supermarket in the area so every two days I walk past this church and sometimes go inside. What I like the most is to see people getting out their way come inside pray and keep on with their business after leaving. One evening there was a prayer and the women’s choir and the added superb acoustics of the temple make you feel in heaven. If this church is in your way do stop and visit it In my opinion it is as magnificent in the outside as in the interior.

Luzhniki Stadium

Reviewed By Steviefull - Kidderminster, United Kingdom

The location of the stadium is easy to get to and in the middle of a massive park so even if you know you are going the right way it does feel like you aren't. With security checks getting into the park it is best to get dropped off on the outskirts and walk in (at least this is what we found). The stadium itself is huge with decent toilet facilities and places to get food. I can imagine it creates a great atmosphere to watch a game with the vocal home support. As a concert venue we were quite far from the stage but this was Rammstein and I have never heard music quite that loud before. A great venue.
