In 1886, when the Essendon Methodist Church was founded, the area was dominated by gigantic trees, deep gullies and reed-fringed lagoons. Mount Alexander Road, "the main street," was dusty in summer. In winter, the mud was churned axle-deep by bullock drays. From this unpromising beginning sprang what is today the North Essendon Uniting Church, which continues to carry Christ's message to the world. The Church continues to minister to the community from which it sprang, as well as refugees and other multicultural parishioners. Worship is on 10:00 am Sunday.

The Burke and Wills expedition aimed to cross Australia from South to North. It was not a total failure; they did achieve their aim, but perished in the desert on their return trip. This monument was erected to their memory by local identity L T Thompson. It's easy to find -- on the median strip directly opposite the bowling club. Burke and Wills have an enduring fascination, especially in Victoria.

Observers with an interest in the history of finance will remember the ES&A Bank, which amalgamated with the ANZ Bank in 1970. The English, Scottish and Australian Chartered Bank was originally an English bank, as was the ANZ. The ES&A Bank in Mt Alexander Rd was built in Modern Gothic style. The building was built of polychrome Hawthorn brick, a common design in the 1880s.. The roof is grey slate, pierced by capped chimneys. The former bank is on the corner of Mt Alexander Rd and Bank St. By the way, the bank has a slightly ecclesiastical appearance. It seems as if it is in use; what for is unclear
