For the last 40 years we have had a family reunion in the park at Lake Independence, on top of the hill where you can see the entire lake and feel the breezes. The trees have gotten much bigger and the concession stand is gone but the place still holds great memories for our people. There is renovation going on with the sidewalks but the children's play area is still there and the swimming beach is also. We did notice that most of the grills are missing from the park so don't forget to bring a small grill if you need to cook food.

If you prefer sandy beaches to the cobblestone or ledge rock shores that epitomize Lake Superior, this is the place to stop. And although the view of Duluth in the background belies the otherwise remote feeling of Park Point, it's still easy to imagine yourself on an ocean. We were there on a day when wave after wave of breakers crashed on the beach and left us mesmerized.

It was a little tricky to find. Park in the upper parking lot and find the trail there. We parked by the boating launch and the trail from there is pretty tricky. The sound of the rocks clicking as you walk, the beautiful pink and green and blue rocks was wonderful. We simply sat and listened to the rocks, enjoying making them move and sing by gently brushing them. We wanted to return there, but never had time. The waves were too mild to hear them sing in the water.

We stumbled on this location while trying to see the Edgar B. Speer come I to the docking area to unload the iron ore. What a special treat it was to see the Tadoussac leaving and the Speer coming in. The views are amazing to be able to watch the freighters come in. You can park and watch or get out and walk along the nice sidewalks or even go out on the point to see the freighters up close. We had been in Duluth at Canal Poi t and watched the freighters coming and going under the aerial lift bridge and that was nice...but this was very special as it July 4th and there were fireworks going off around while the boat was getting into position to moor. This is a great place to see the freighters if you are a boat nerd or just coming to check it out for the first time!

This is a unique beach with pink rocks. Very secluded. Spectacular views. Slightly difficult to get to, but worth the effort. This fact also makes it not very crowded. Close to the Gitchi Gami state trail. There is paved parking right off of Highway 61, at the Twin Points public water access, which is 16 miles north of Two Harbors. A good place to park for access to the state trail also. Check it out.
