Things to do in Milwaukee, Wisconsin (WI): The Best Shopping

July 2, 2021 Jacquiline Darosa

Located on the shores of Lake Michigan, Milwaukee is perhaps best known for its famous breweries and the Major League Brewers, but there's more to the city than beer and baseball. Milwaukee is rich in historical and cultural attractions, making it the perfect place for a weekend of exploring. Check out the newly expanded Milwaukee Art Museum or the Mitchell Park Horticultural Society, which hosts an annual show of the same flora and fauna seen in Georgia O'Keefe's paintings. Those interested in the city's history can visit the grand Pabst Mansion, former home of one of the city's famous beer barons, or the Milwaukee Public Museum, to see what life was like in Old Milwaukee. If the kids are along, don't miss the Milwaukee County Zoo or the Betty Brinn Children's Museum. Of course a trip to the "Genuine American City" would not be complete without a tour of the Miller Brewing Company and a Brewers game at Miller Park.

Clock Shadow Creamery

The Clock Shadow Creamery is Milwaukee's first and only cheese factory! We were founded in 2012 and are one of a few urban creameries in the country. We specialize in crafting fresh cheeses. Cheddar cheese curds made every Wednesday and Friday, goat curds, quark, chevre, and ricotta cheese are some of our customer favorites! Fresh goat cheeses are seasonally available. We also produce a variety of hard cheeses. These include our Sadie: Goat Cheddar, Capriko: Goat and Cow Milk Blend, Colby, Monterey Jack, and Cheddar cheeses with several flavors and ages. Martha's Pimento Cheeses, La Belle varieties, and Bon Bree Brick varieties are also made at our environmentally sustainable facility in the Walker's Point neighborhood. Clock Shadow Creamery is a pioneering urban cheese factory committed to being a model local venture. Our goal is to produce and provide our customers with amazingly fresh, local cheese. Our mission is simple; our cheese factory will tread softly on the local environment, provide opportunities to learn the craft of cheese making, educate the public on the nutrient value of fresh dairy products, and connect local farmers choices, with the values of our customers. While it is the first urban cheese factory in Wisconsin, our cheese makers are certainly aged - with wisdom. Clock Shadow Creamery was created by the founders of Cedar Grove Cheese, one of Wisconsin's oldest cheese producers. Clock Shadow Creamery founder, Bob Wills, grew up in the Milwaukee area. In fact, his first home was on Oklahoma Avenue, just about a mile south of the creamery. The cheese factory continues to embody these founding values and embraces new relationships with our diverse community moving forward. Growing up in Milwaukee, Bob Wills learned to appreciate the ethnic diversity of his city and its many festivals and events. His youthful involvement included helping organize the Milwaukee Hunger Hikes and Earth Day cleanups of the rivers. After leaving the area for years that included stints in Washington DC and Chicago, Bob returned to Wisconsin, married the cheese maker's daughter, took over the Cedar Grove Cheese business and achieved his goal of being a Wisconsin stereotype. Living and raising children in Plain, a town of about 700, has its great advantages, but the opportunity to bring his chosen craft to the cheese desert of Milwaukee was irresistible. The Clock Shadow Creamery is a homecoming for Bob and his son has taken on many of the responsibilities of daily operations at the Milwaukee cheese factory.

We took a look at the Clock Shadow Creamery. We had samples of several different types of cheese that are made right on the premise. We took a tour of the building, which took us to the roof where there is a bee hive that they use for their fresh honey and the hydroponic gardens. We then went into a room where we got a run down of how the the cheese process is done. We were lucky enough to be able to see a bit of the process through the window. You do have to call ahead to reserve time for a tour. The people are very friendly. Definitely recommend the stop at the Clock Shadow Creamery.
