Stretching from the wooded Dordogne to the towering peaks of the Pyrenees, this vast region is a popular winter sports destination, but one without the hordes that besiege the Alps. Spring's melted snows lure kayakers and rafting enthusiasts. In summer, amateur and advanced hikers take to the hills.

Cirque de Gavarnie is a wonderful natural amphitheater located near in the homonymous town, in French Pyrenees. In fact, you can do a great walk from the town to the amphitheater. In fact, we did this excursion with all family (included my 4 years daughter and she enjoyed a lot). In the amphitheater there is a high and amazing waterfall and the views from here are very nice. The hiking is about 3 hours go and return. During almost all the excursion, it is possible to see the waterfall and almost at the end there is a hotel/restaurant, where you can relax and eat or drink something. In the last part of the trekking, you can arrive to the buttom part of the waterfall. Amazing! Top in Pyrenees! (See also Office de Tourisme de Gavarnie and Hotel du Cirque Cafe & Restaurant)

The trail starts from the car park at the far end of the village and it's a pretty easy hike to the base of the waterfall. The falls aren't massive but very picturesque as various streams bounce off the cliffs, and a lovely spot to cool off on a hot day. For a decent hike you can follow the marked route to the top of the cliff (a combination of trails and stairs), and then along the top past the farm (?) and the road, and then continue until you are on the opposite side from the village. The trail carries on along the cliff top but we took the steep trail that descends to the village, and back to the car park. Great views all along the trail, and lots of shaded sections (good news - it was over 30 that day). NB the Auberge in Autoire had stopped serving lunch at 1.45 so we drove 10 minutes to the Relais in Gintrac and had an excellent lunch for half the price.
