Think you need an ocean for a beach? Think again. There are miles and miles of sandy lakefront beaches in Michigan (thanks to the four Great Lakes that border it). The west coast of Michigan has especially nice beaches—try a rental in Muskegon, Grand Haven or Saugatuck. You won’t need a car when visiting Mackinac Island. In fact, they’re not allowed—this lovely Victorian resort town is pedestrian-only.

This music venue and nonprofit organization is dedicated to the presentation and encouragement of folk, roots and ethnic music through live performances by well-known and up-and-coming entertainers.
I'm part of a Hawaiian Dance Group, so we decided to see the Hawaiian Musicians here. It's a nice small venue. Makes a great intimate concert environment. We were on the main floor. The sound and view were excellent! They have concessions, and an elevator for people who can't do the stairs. There were multiple opportunities to meet, greet, purchase CD's, get them autographed, and take photos. A Nice, Small place to have enjoy entertainment!

Detroit, Michigan, is the home of Motown, the pop music empire founded by Berry Gordy in 1959. But before Motown came jazz. In Detroit, jazz means Baker's Keyboard Lounge, which claims to be the world's oldest operating jazz club. Located at 20510 Livernois Avenue, it opened in 1934 and is noted for its long history of presenting local and major jazz acts, its excellent acoustics, its intimacy (only 99 seats), its Art Deco furnishings and Art Deco style paintings, piano-shaped bar painted with a keyboard motif, tilted mirrors that allow customers to view the pianist's hands and its Steinway piano that was purchased in New York by jazz legend Art Tatum especially for Baker's in the 1950s. Baker's has hosted the greatest names in blues and jazz, including Ella Fitzgerald, Miles Davis, Oscar Peterson, George Shearing, Louis Armstrong, John Coltrane, Fats Waller, Erroll Garner, Gene Krupa, Sarah Vaughn, Joe Williams, Cab Calloway, Maynard Ferguson, Woody Herman, the Modern Jazz Quartet, Nate "King" Cole, Art Tatum, Dave Brubeck and Gerry Mulligan. In 1961, then unknown Barbra Streisand performed at Baker's. Truth be told, Baker's isn't the world's oldest jazz club, only the oldest in Detroit. Chicago's Green Mill opened in 1907. But, hey, who's counting? Originally, Baker's was founded as a lunchtime sandwich shop in 1933. A year later, Clarence Baker, the son of the owners, began booking jazz pianists. Today, Baker's continues to serve food. But for most visitors, it's all about the sound. In 1986, Baker's was designated a Michigan Historic Site.
