While Venice’s mainland suburb of Mestre has a history and character all its own dating back to medieval times, it owes its growth and fortune to its more powerful offshore neighbor. Unfortunately, it’s everything Venice is not: modern, industrial and cheap. But while they may not compare to the romantic canals of Venice, Mestre does have attractions of its own, including the Torre (Tower) dell'Orologio and the Duomo (Cathedral) di San Lorenzo, located on its town square, Piazza Ferretto.

We came across this lovely Art Nouveau cinema when we were exploring the historic centre of Mestre. It really is a lovely old building and, I believe, still a working cinema. Unfortunately we did not have the time to enter or see a film, however as films are probably dubbed into Italian it would not make much sense to us as we speak little Italian.

The square is huge & spectacular, with amazing Christmas lights still on display when we visited in Jan. the clock tower has a little museum under the portico which is worth a look. Make sure to go in both daytime & nighttime.
