Things to do in Memphis, Tennessee (TN): The Best Nature & Parks

July 19, 2021 Tynisha Seiler

Memphis is a pilgrimage for those wanting to visit the birthplace of the blues, of soul and of rock 'n' roll. On Beale Street, W.C. Handy put down on paper the first written blues music. Elvis, Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis and Johnny Cash all recorded at the historic Sun Records, which is now a museum. Graceland, the second most-visited home in America, welcomes visitors from around the world who yearn for a peek into the life of "the King." Beyond the music, Tennessee's largest city also offers much more. It has more sunny days each year than Miami, and combines southern tradition and hospitality with modern amenities. You'll enjoy great dining (be sure to sample the barbecued ribs), art galleries and exciting nightlife.

Catch'Em Lakes is a great way to get outdoors with family and friends and spend some quality time reeling in the big ones. There are two heavily stocked catfish lakes that do not require a fishing license. There is also a bait shop on the premises that has everything you need including rental poles if you don't have your own.

Wolf River Greenway

Reviewed By Bob-WorldTraveler - Memphis, United States

The Wolf River Greenway stretches miles along the Wolf River (duh) from East Memphis to Germantown. The path is paved and about ten feet wide. Some parts are closed for construction or not complete yet, but plenty of the greenway is open for walking and bicycling. Most of the way is shaded. There are several parking areas. The Greenway connects to walking paths in Shelby Farms Park and the Greenline walkway to midtown Memphis. This is a great place for walking or jogging. Enjoy.

The park is home to two playgrounds, a dog park, an open Greensward for recreation, a Veterans Plaza, and the 126-acre Old Forest State Natural Area. It features more than eight miles of trails, including the Bike Gate arch and plaza trail. The park is managed by the nonprofit Overton Park Conservancy. Overton Park is also a major cultural attraction, home to a nine-hole golf course, Memphis Brooks Museum of Art, the Memphis Zoo, Memphis College of Art, and the Levitt Shell concert pavilion.

Overton Park is a beautiful park in Memphis midtown. Old forest trail in the park offers several running paths with splendid forest views. Levitt Shell is an open-air amphitheater in the western side of the park at which you can enjoy plenty of free music concerts almost four night a week during Summer and Fall. Brooks museum in the western side of the park is a small good quality art museum with a neat coffee shop inside. The park is very close to Overton Square where you can find great restaurants and entertainment options in a lively environment as well. If you come to Memphis and would like to spend a few hours to relax in a park, enjoy the music, or run in the woods right in the heart of midtown, give Overton Park a shot and you will be satisfied.

Memphis Botanic Garden

Peaceful gardens offering beautiful scenery all year round.

Reviewed By Anthro2010 - Memphis, United States

Located inside Audubon Park, the Botanic Gardens offer a vast range of natural and designed garden spaces. Kids will love running around the children's garden, filled with hobbit-sized tree houses, fairy houses, music houses, and other delightful creations. A massive Japanese bridge over a large pond filled with koi is another favorite, as are the large rose garden, nature trail, and various fountains and water features. The indoor facility is well designed; I've attended weddings and meetings, and enjoyed the spaces. Free parking; small restaurant.

Tom Lee Park has a great view of the Mississippi River as it is centrally located between the two bridges spanning across the river into downtown. A great green space, fun for the whole family. Not to mention, this is also the site for Memphis' iconic annual music festival, Beale Street Music Fest, and other Memphis in May activities including BBQ Fest.
