Monument to General Juan Rius Rivera. The impressive equestrian sculpture of the military man with a machete held high was made by the Puerto Rican artist, Salvador Rivera Cardona, of the company Julissa Casting Inc. of Dorado. Rius Rivera was born in the Rio Canas Abajo neighborhood of Mayaguez. The monument is located in a square that constitutes a new space for Mayaguezans and visitors.
The monument, located at the eastern part of the Plaza de Colon, consists of a column that ends in a coronation around which there is an inscription that reads: "The Mayaguez people dedicate this Monument to the memory of its founders. Year of 1944." On the coronation rests an open book of solid bronze, on which the following is read on the left: "Under the reign of Carlos III the City of Mayaguez was founded. Year of 1760."; and on the right, the names of: Faustino Martinez de Matos, Juan de Aponte and Juan de Silva. The work ends in a cross, also in bronze, on top of the book.
