The Hawaiian island of Maui is a destination for true nature lovers. The ethereal bamboo forest and churning waterfalls in Haleakala National Park can be explored via the Waimoku Falls Trail. Stretch out on warm, golden sands or hit the surf for an unforgettable windsurfing or snorkeling session. Driving the scenic road to Hana along the island’s northeastern shore will be among the most spectacular journeys of your life. Time stands still at the Hawaiian village of Keanae, definitely worth a visit.

**Please contact them at (808) 667-6706 or [email protected]. Do not confuse them with Hawaii Ocean Project, which is a touring boat agency.** I wanted my young boys (7 and 9) to enjoy snorkeling for the first time, so I decided to go with Ocean Project Maui. It was easy to book a time to meet them and communication was excellent via email and texts prior to our lesson day. On our lesson day, Mel and Laura were really great with the boys - so patient and fun. The family got an educational lesson on the different marine life we would be seeing in the ocean. We got a lesson on how to use our snorkel gear and as a bonus we were fitted in wet suits, which kept us warm in the ocean. Mel and Laura were amazing at teaching my boys how to snorkel and pointed out all the sea life that we had learned about. We saw a lot of different fish and even a green sea turtle. The time went by so quickly and we had so much fun. The whole time we were in the ocean we felt safe with Mel and Laura. After our snorkel time, the boys were given an educational kit to take back home and use for a show and tell on more information about Maui marine life. I definitely recommend booking with Ocean Project Maui if you want a safe and fun-filled time learning how to snorkel. Even though we have snorkeled before, we learned so much and were able to use the tips that they had taught us for the rest of our trip.

We did the Makena Bay Kayaking and Snorkeling tour and it was amazing! We saw so many turtles, beautiful reef, and bright, colorful fish! Jason was a fantastic guide. He was very knowledgeable and professional. As someone who is a little nervous in water, I was especially comforted to know that Jason is a certified master diver - I felt very safe with him as our guide. He took amazing pictures for us as an additional package - definitely worth it!! Highly recommend this tour, it was great experience.

A very scenic, lovely and uncrowded beach. We held our Wedding Ceremony here in May 2018. During our Ceremony, I saw only a handful of beachgoers throughout the entire stretch of beautiful shore. Quiet and protected, we would highly recommend this beach if you are visiting the Napili/Kapalua Bay area.

We arrived at Ma'alaea at 6:15 AM to sign waivers and get gear. It was to be a 2 dive trip: Molokini and Turtle Town. The boat left around 7:00 and before long we were diving at Molokini. We never made it to Turtle Town, instead doing the second dive at The Pali because it was nearby after our extended surface interval. A surface interval between dives is usually 45 minutes to an hour. It gives time to off-gas, eat, rehydrate, and move the boat to the 2nd site. Ours was over 90 minutes because the captain spotted a humpback “competition group” and we were off in hot pursuit, as were 5 indefatigable males challenging each other while chasing the charms of one fertile female. One suitor was badged with a bloody back. Another suddenly surfaced rolling sideways with a perpendicular pectoral. “He was rammed,” explained our Ahab, while firing his great, white Canon. Eventually, someone said, “Aren’t we supposed to do another dive?” Ahab ended the chase and we were soon again submerged in the briny deep, but with the constant music of the distant mating ritual resonating in our ears as we eyed eels and spotted rays. We all left happy. We still talk about it. Hope you have a similar experience.

Last week, my wife and I took a trip to Hana and continued around Maui through Kula and back to Kahului. We did the drive in our SUV but I am an avid motorcycle rider and want to give my advice to other riders. Here are my observations and advice: • Prior to trip, open Google Maps in street view at various points along the journey to get a good representation of the type of riding you will encounter. • If you able to listen to a road to Hana app while riding, I highly recommend doing it. There are several highly rated apps for purchase. We chose the GyPSyguide.com app and were extremely satisfied. If you can’t listen to an app, then I suggest you do a little homework using Maui Revealed or other resource prior to leaving to determine where you want to stop and what you want to see. • Leave early to beat the heavy traffic. It will make your trip more enjoyable. Paia by sunrise or soon thereafter would be great. • Most motorcyclists enjoy twisty roads with nice sweeping turns that can be taken in the 35 – 60 mph range. The road to Hana is more like speeds in the 20 -25 mph range with extremely tight turns in the 5-15 mph range. Great ride for scenery but probably not the most enjoyable riding you ever do. In my opinion, the most ideal motorcycle for the trip would be a mid-sized adventure bike or mid-sized scooter. • The only passing is when someone is kind enough to pull over. • Plan on rain at some point of your journey. A light weight rain suit would be advisable. • As you have probably heard, the road to Hana is all about the journey and not Hana itself. This statement is very true. Driving to Hana and back or continuing around the island is a very long day but very doable if you pace yourself a little and don’t stop at every attraction. If you plan on doing some extended hiking or explore every attraction, then you should make arrangements to stay overnight along the route. • You can choose to turn around at Hana, continue on 10 miles to the Seven Sacred Pools and turn around or continue around the island through Kula and back to Kahului. We enjoyed the drive all the way around the island. As you probably heard, the road gets bad. It is real bad (gravel and broken pavement) for about 10 miles from about Kukui’Ula Gulch to about the Nu’u Refuge. Any vehicle (including rentals) will make it fine but the road is rough. I would not recommend this journey for any large road bike or scooter. I would highly recommend it for an adventure bike. • Starting at Manuwainui Gulch, you will encounter some great motorcycle riding road. Good pavement and endless sweeping turns with little traffic. Great stuff. • Hope this helps!

We drove up from wailea and decided to take highway 340 from the northeast. The drive is adventurous the last 30 minutes before you arrive at Olivine Pools. It is a narrow mostly single lane along the mountain edge offering spectacular views. You will not get car sick as you drive between 5-10 mph only and you will see why. You will need a gps as there is no sign marking olivine pools. It's a small dirt parking area just off the highway. You will know you are there as you walk about 75 yards and you will see a large yellow DANGER sign. Please read it and the plaque below it. You can see the pools from the top but it's not that bad of a hike down. Definitely would not go into the pools as we can see the waves washing up and sweeping back into the ocean. Definitely worth a visit.
