Most museums gather fragments of their area of specialty, and use them to tell a story. This one is a story in its own right - not a fragment, but an entire pharmacy frozen in amber. All of the jars and vases and drawers full of the medicines used in Cuba a century or more ago are arrayed just as they would have appeared to a late 19th or early 20th century customer. Total immersion in a different world. And beautiful to behold. Matanzas is not going to be on everyone's dance card, but if you are in the neighborhood, do stop and see.

We loved this museum. It's free and donation based and the man in charge is a lovely older gentleman named Maximo. We've never met someone so enthusiastic and passionate about his city and history regarding the firefighters of Matanzas. Our favorite part was the stories he told about the Cuban-American counter-revolutionaries and the objects they confiscated from them as late as 2016! Lots of spy-worthy stories and a rich history of an organization that does a lot of good for the city. Tip : You'll make Maximo's day if you bring any firefighter memorabilia from your city/state/country to add to the museum's. collection. Badges, t-shirts, caps, etc.

Great experience and great prices for the rum. Staff were so helpful and we tried loads of free samples before choosing.

We visited this museum as part of an excursion with the Viking cruise line. I had done quite a bit of research so I knew what to expect. As part of an excursion - it is expensive, a long day, and the museum is all in Spanish. Having said that, we all really enjoyed the experience. I would only recommend it if you are with a tour guide as there are no signs in English. I also could not get my Google Translate to work, likely because I did not have internet. If you take a Viking Tour, don’t worry, the buses are air conditioned, have clean restrooms, and you are provided with cold water bottles. The tour guide Jose was knowledgeable and funny. Not only did he take care of us on the bus but he also explained the exhibits at the museum. After we visited the museum, we walked to a nearby resort to actually see the actual Bay of Pigs. We then got back on the bus and drove to Playa Larga where we had dinner at Hostal Enrique (highly recommend).
