Clairefontaine is an old barn (XII-XIVèmes centuries) of Cistercian monks transformed into a noble mansion by the late fourteenth century. It is located in a landscaped park with flower gardens and ponds. Many domestic animals live in Clairefontaine. The mansion, private and inhabited all year round, is fully furnished with furniture XV-XVII centuries eras. The interior tour of the mansion is only guided and lasts approximately a quarter past one. It takes place for individuals and groups all year round by appointement.

Visited this garden on recommendation of our hosts in nearby gite (see separate review La Cachette), on a Sunday morning in June 2018.Fantastic weather helped. What a very pleasant surprise. Wonderful walk round the ornate gardens, extensive lake with “cloud trees” all around. There is a restaurant/coffee shop where we had salmon bruchetta which was excellant. At the side is a small shop and on the other side of the coffee shop is a further shop selling plants and Bonsai trees of all sizes and prices. My wife was in a wheelchair and whilst some of the path is uphill, it wasn’t too steep that we couln’t get round. There is a separate section of bamboo garden with well established plants. I believe we went at the right time, just after it opened, as there were more people coming into the park as we were leaving. Highly recommended if you are in the area (even worth an hour drive). We will visit again on a future trip.

For just EUR6, you get a tub of stale bread and the chance to spend an afternoon with over 150 kangaroos and wallabies. The park is very well laid out, with paths for the humans to stick to and the rest of the space left for the animals. All the animals are very well cared for and have plenty of space both in the sun and the shade. If they want some bread they happily hop over to you and take it so gently. It reminded us of the day we spent in Australia Zoo way back in 2006. Overall a wonderful experience, and completely unexpected in the Loire!
