Things to do in Madeira, Madeira Islands: The Best Photography Tours

July 31, 2021 Viva Honore

Breezy Madeira is an eponymous island in the Madeira Islands, a Portuguese archipelago. The capital city of Funchal was settled in the 15th century and is a colorful collection of gardens, religious sites, and quirky tourist attractions like the thatched-roof Madeira Story Centre. Hike to the summit of Pico Ruivo and you’ll feel like you’ve climbed through the clouds. Unwind over a glass of Madeira wine, an historic fortified beverage that’s musky and subtly sweet.

Emanuel is the longest serving hiking guide on Madeira. He knows every inch of the Island and ensures customers have a great time. Our walk was perfectly pitched to the ability of the group. An added bonus when I mentioned I didn’t like the Poncha at the hotel he insisted on taking us to the bar where he got his first drink in the 1960s ... and where the Poncha was fresh and much better

We had an amazing day with Nuno. He took us to off-road areas, he was patient with us ans taught us all of his knowledge about the plants and the local history. Madeira is the whole world in a tiny size: within a 15 minutes drive one can feel in Ireland, in Hawai or in Central Asia. All of these with the soft-temper of Nuno and the Portuguese. I was concerned this day-trip could be a tourist rip off as one experiences sometimes. But it was not and we had an unforgetfull day. Do not pass on this day-trip!
