One of the best levadas that we have walked over the years with stunning views across the valley and down to Sao Vicente. Access is via a 200 metre track from the E104 above Sao Vicente and you can go either side along the Levada as it’s crosses the track.. We went towards the right and walked for about 40 minutes to the tunnel passing waterfalls, high cliffs and large trees along the way. At each turn there are lovely views across the valley or up into the hills behind. There were quite a few birds around as well as small fish swimming in the leveda. We turned around at the long tunnel as we only had a mobile phone flashlight and the path was quite narrow. It’s worth going further if you have the right equipment and a bit of courage! All helped by a lovely sunny afternoon.....

Beautiful beach, great location within the bay so the tide isn’t too rough to swim like in other parts of the island.

We were staying at Valle Paraizo close to Camacha and close to this levada; so it was our first and second walks - in different directions. On the second trip (towards choupana from valle paraizo) we combined it with a return walk on the lower levada dos tornos. These stretches were easy walking, level (of course) along the dry levada, and passed through trees and around valleys - with good views down to the sea and across the little villages and communities. We thoroughly enjoyed it. There is good bus access at valle paraizo and camacha; at choupana we saw a taxi hoping for passengers and walked down beneath the football stadium to another road that does have bus service into Funchal. Nice and close to Funchal; no tunnels or dangerous drops in the parts we did. We downloaded the walkme app to help track progress and where to get on and off the levada.
