Far away from stress, hectic and noise, the rhythm of nature determines the daily routine. Everything you need on the way is carried by the camels. The length of the daily stages is therefore variable - we do not have to arrive at a certain place in the evening. The starting point of our desert tours is M'hamid - an oasis on the edge of the southern Moroccan Sahara. M'hamid is the 'Gateway to the Desert'; Here the road ends and here begins our tour.

There is no better way to experience the desert than with someone who knows it well. The tour leader, Mohsin, grew up as a nomad of the Sahara Desert, spending his childhood trekking through these locations also by camel and walking. This background ables Mohsin to offer a specialized tour with a lot of knowledge and stories to tell.

Mohsin it's a lovely guide, guy and person. It's been so helpful from the beginning. For him that's not only a job, that's love. It's possible to see how he works with love and how well he knows the place where he born. It's been amazing sharing experience and thought with him,he knows a lot of things of other cultures as well. Trust me. If you wanna have a different experience from the typical travel agency don't wait to contact him! And the only things that you need to put in your suitcase are: Respect Curiosity Love Enjoy! Gaya

Hassan is an extremely competent guide who is not only very experienced in leading treks in the Sahara Desert and Atlas Mountains but is also dedicated to conserving the environment at all times. Catering primarily for people from German-speaking countries, his command of the language is incredibly good. At the same time, he is also very funny and jokes with both locals and visitors. We thoroughly enjoyed our time with him, loved the food cooked by Ismail and dancing round the camp with the dromedary leaders.

7. The Great Erg Chegaga Sahara Tours From Marrakech

Marrakech Travel Big Smile

The 2 days desert tour from Marrakech the Chegaga dunes is a long drive, but it's totally worth it if you don't have enough time to stretch your travels into more days to enjoy a slower pace and spend more time exploring. This tour takes you in a short period of time through the best parts of the Moroccan south to the biggest and wildest dunes of Erg Chegaga. Because of the harsh offroad surrounding the dunes, it has kept its charm and wildness and peace, only camels and 4x4 vehicles can reach the heart of Erg Chegaga where you will be mesmerized by the surrounding sand sea, the astonishing sunsets and sunrises and the hospitality of the locals.

Inclusions: Accommodation as per itinerary, Overnight accommodation, Fuel surcharge, Breakfast, Dinner

Overall it was a great experience. Most of our time was spent traveling in a mini bus, but time at camp was really worth it. A couple highlights: - Riding on the camels. They seemed to be treated ok and it was neat to walk by all the local agriculture (mostly melons). This was not a very sandy area, but there were some dunes. It felt like we were in a huge flat crater. - Eating dinner with our guide in the big tent. He told us about several berber traditions and what it was like to go from a nomadic lifestyle to working in tourism. He included all the members of our group, speaking English or Spanish as needed. The food was very good, and I was glad to have several questions answered about moroccan cuisine, such as learning that "sheeba" is wormwood/absinthe, and it's what they put in the tea when it's cold outside. - Our tent was simple but very clean and spacious. Much nicer than I expected. Areas for improvement / things to keep in mind - When booking this trip we got a confirmation number and the name of the tour company, but it was a bit tricky to figure out who to call/email for them to pick you up (and we didn't speak French). Definitely work with someone at your riad/hostel to get in touch with this tour company so you don't need to worry about it. Evidently, even though you book months in advance, the details of where to pick you up are decided last minute. - The tours along the route to Zagora leave a lot to be desired. On the way there, they stopped at the place they filmed Gladiator and some Game of Thrones episodes, but the tour guide there was mediocre and you mostly just wander around, so bring a big hat and plenty of water. Also, you'll need to pay the guide 30 DH or, so have some small bills handy. On the way back, we mostly just stopped to use the restroom. - The restaurants along the way are pricey, for tourists. I was on vacation and didn't mind spending 120 DH a meal, but if you're on a budget, bringing your own snacks would be a good call. One final silver lining of the tour is it's in a group, so you get to meet interesting folks from around the world.
