Things to do in Luxor, Nile River Valley: The Best Walking Tours

September 13, 2021 Etsuko Causey

The Luxor in Las Vegas is to the actual CITY of Luxor, Egypt, as marshmallow fluff is to fois gras. (We’re sure you knew that. We just enjoy analogies.) Sure, the hotel/casino in Vegas might have a beam of light visible from space, but we bet you'll find a hot-air balloon ride over the Valley of Kings much more illuminating. (Editor's note: Our list was compiled before political unrest prompted many countries to issue travel warnings for Egypt. If you're currently planning a trip to Egypt, please consider the risks and monitor your government's travel alerts.)

We did a customized version of this tour, adding also Medinet Habu and Nefertari’s tomb in the Valley of the Queens (planned, though at the end we decided not to visit the tomb as the heat was too much for our baby boy and we felt we had seen enough in the Valley of the Kings). Our guide in Luxor and an apparently highly experienced Egyptologist was Remon - very knowledgeable and professional. We were on a tight itinerary, wishing to see 4 different sites on the West Bank while returning to the hotel by 12:00 for our baby’s nap (just a one-way drive took almost an hour), but Remon put it all together in a way where we managed to see just about everything we had planned, though ultimately we decided to skip Nefertari’s tomb and came back to the hotel a bit early. Of the three sites we saw, I would rank them in the following order in terms of excitement: - Valley of the Kings (tombs of Ramesses V/VI, Seti I, Ramesses III and Ramesses IX, in this order) - Medinet Habu (temple of Ramesses III) - temple of Hatsepshut With the baby boy, what we perhaps needed the most was flexibility, which we got in addition to the sea of knowledge about the sites as well as broader ancient Egyptian history from Remon. Recommended!

Unfortunately I was unable to take the tours booked given my decision to cancel the trip with the Caronivirus concerns. Heshem, who had been most helpful and cooperative during my planning readily refunded my payments and was courteous and positive even when losing business.

My tour with Saber was absolutely amazing he was so knowledgeable and comes from a family of artisans and that history was incredible to hear firsthand. He also knew the best times to visit the sites and I was fortunate to have some of the spaces to myself! He took picture taking just as seriously as I did and went above and beyond to capture some great images of me. He was very passionate about the subject matter and patient and I felt I could ask any question!
