The current exhibition presents more than 150 of the most interesting pictures and statues from the extensive town collection. The story of this collection started more than 90 years ago. You will have possibility to see there the masterpieces of Czech art by authors such as Julius Mařák, Josef Čapek, Emil Filla, Josef Lada, Otakar Kubín, František Tichý, Josef Váchal, Václav Boštík and Olbram Zoubek. From the outside this looks like a small, ordinary house but go inside and it is mind blowing. In the 1920s Josef Portman commissioned his friend, Josef Vachal, to paint the inside walls, ceilings and furniture of his house and the result is an extravaganza of colour and themes, varying from the religious to the pornographic. Unfortunately there is not much explanation in English but wandering and immersing yourself in the art is totally absorbing. The museum also holds small temporary exhibitions by other artists. In the garden the artistic challenges continue with a man falling out of a tree and a woman falling off the roof. There is also a wooden totem sculpture of an owl and an even smaller house with seating, a bed on a ledge above a curtained off area and a cooking oven. I do not know who, if anyone, lived there. Perhaps the artist? This whole house was nearly gutted and ruined but has now been restored and it is certainly worth seeking out. It's a pity there is no guide in English for more explanation In the town there is also a whole street with black and white murals on the side walls painted by Josef Vachal by the pub U Sklepu which is worth exploring.
