We were stopping in Florida and went for a day trip to Mount Dora. We found the little Historical Society Museum hidden up a side street. It cost just a couple of Dollars for the entrance fee and is quite small inside, but it is crammed full with interesting bits and pieces of history from the area. The building was originally the fire station back in the 1920's and then a jail, so some of the exhibits are connected to the building's origins. The three prison cells are still there to view (or lock someone up in if you wish). The lady that runs the museum is very helpful with answering questions. It took my wife and I around 45 minutes or so to get around and see the items and read their descriptions. Mount Dora was a really nice town to visit and finding the museum was a bit of a bonus for us.

Check before you arrive here as it’s only open for limited hours and I guess it’s manned by volunteers. There is free parking and they simply ask for a donation. We were warmly greeted by an older gentleman who happily explained about the area and buildings. The position of the museum on the lake side is lovely. There are 2 old houses, a school room, library and war hut. Each building is interesting in its own right and they have great photographs of them moving the houses to this spot which to an English person is fascinating as at home houses are dismantled brick by brick not put on a lorry and moved. Loved the displays in the houses and the interesting stuff in the library. Loved looking at the old magazines in the library. My friend finds the war very interesting and the museum in the war hut was very interesting. We were there about 90 minutes and whilst it’s a tiny place it’s worth a visit.

Happened to choose Mt. Dora to drive through since it was described as pretty. What a beautiful "gift shop" next to the Mt. Dora Center for the Arts. Not a gift shop...an upscale and eclectic artist coop/gallery. Lovely work, friendly people, talented artists! Everything was high quality, and they clearly tried to provide a wide range of options and price levels...from that 10$ must have fused glass little trinket dish to the huge works of art that you (me, anyway) lust after. In that way, it's almost a museum of creative work. Very happy that we found this place!

Modernism Museum is dedicated to showcasing the inspiration and design creativity in the largest known collection of Modernist art by some of the most iconic and influential American masters of the craft. The Museum offers an unprecedented collection of Fine Art and Design, one that defines the Studio Crafts Movement, from mid-century works to those being created today. The newest exhibit, "esherick to NAKASHIMA," will focus on the Studio Arts movement and how both Wharton Esherick and George Nakashima used wood to tell a story. This show is a must-see for all who love art!
Current exhibit "Memphis Design" is outstanding and this musuem has curated it very well. Several pieces owned by David Bowie make up this collection representing Ettore Sotsass, De Lucci, M. Graves, P. Shire, etc. The video going along with the exhibit is very professionally done and very informative. A really good way to spend a couple of hours....you won't regret it!

Mount Dora Center for the Arts is a multifaceted community center providing: Fine art gallery exhibitions, Educational programs for all ages and levels, Annual fine-art auction event ("Art of the Deal" every November), Monthly Art Strolls (every 2nd Friday from 6-8pm) and Annual Mount Dora Arts Festival (1st weekend of every February).
We happened to catch an opening of artwork by a number of talented artists. There was oils, acrylics, and pastels. We actually purchased two paintings, by two different artists, and are thrilled with the purchases. They were fairly, and moderately priced (for an original, one of a kind oil, and an original, one of a kind acrylic).

Another place that was one my list, we were there first thing in the morning so we had the place to ourselves. Very interesting to see this collection and Wax figures. Several photo opportunities. Easy to find almost right next to the Citrus Tower
