Things to do in La Paz, La Paz Department: The Best Multi-day Tours

July 1, 2021 Kaleigh Reichenbach

Sitting in a valley in the Andes Mountains, La Paz is the city that touches the clouds. The de facto capital of Bolivia, and sitting between 3300 and 4100 meters above sea level, La Paz is the highest capital city in the world. Rich with 19th century churches, museums of artifacts from the pre-Conquest era, precarious overlooks, and colorful markets, La Paz is truly unique. The Witches’ Market, in the center of the city, sells charms and potions for Aymara rituals, as well as souvenirs.

Peru was a region of successive civilizations since the emergence of Caral-Supe in 3200 BC. C.17 The Inca Empire was the last autochthonous or indigenous state, which dominated a large part of the South American west towards the fifteenth century. The conquest of the Incario was followed by the next century, after which the territory was configured as a viceroyalty of the Spanish Empire   Bolivia In its territory, ancient civilizations such as Tiwanaku, the Hydraulic Culture of Las Lomas and the Moxeña culture developed. First the Incas and later the Spanish conquerors dominated the territory until the country became independent in 1825. Having developed the traditions with a miscegenation of pre-Columbian cultures with Spanish culture, is a multi-ethnic and pluricultural country, rich in mixture and syncretism of customs and traditions received from the indigenous peoples and the Spanish conquerors

After a 10 day Traveling adventure with a group through another traveling group, my friend and I opted for a private tour of Rainbow Mountain! Unfortunately it snowed on the day we reserved our tour; however it was one of our most enjoyable days due to the kindness of our guide Richard. He was very informative regarding the history and culture of the area and people. We were able to see some beautiful sites on the way to and home. We met some local folks, stopped by a lovely place to eat Los Cabanas and have coffee. The food was awesome!! Richard took some beautiful photos and was patient with us when we wanted to stop to view some sights/alpacas!! The time with Cusco Holiday Peru Servicios Turisticos was one of our most favorite and memorable!! Thanks for such a wonderful time and adventure!!

I first met Pablo on an organized tour. A couple of years later when I planned to return to Bolivia, I contacted him asking if he could organize a tour for me. I told him that I wished to visit Lake Titicaca, Parque Condoriri, Santa Cruz and Che Guevara trail. He took care of everything. He responded quickly to any questions and dispelled any doubts I had. The tour was just fantastic, we had a lot of fun and I had a great time. He is a patient, reliable and kind person and has long standing experience as a guide and very sound knowledge about Bolivia. He also speaks English very well.

Me and a friend climbed Huyana Potosi in January 2020 with Pedro from Bolivia Mountaineering. I can only recommend to do the tour with him. A few days before the trip I met up at his office and he took his time (at least 1,5 hours) to discuss everything about the trek. After that I felt well informed what to expect. He was very honest about the level of difficulty and the dangers of climbing huyana potosi, but at the same time he gave me the feeling that I can do it (I wasn't that sure about it before that). He was also flexible regarding the starting date. We waited for a few days to start the trek in order to start on a day the weather forecast was more promising (it was during rainy season, so most days weren't very suitable to climb the mountain). We decided to climb it in only 2 days (1 night). However, we've already spent 1-2 weeks in altitudes above 3500 metres. If you're not acclimatized yet,it probably makes more sense to do it in 3 days (and spend some days in and around la paz, there are lots of other day hikes you can do such as Pico Austria to get prepared). The equipment he provided us was in a good condition. The first day we climbed to the refuge (at around 5200 metres of altitude). After arriving at the shelter we went to the glacier and he explained us how to walk in the ice/snow with the crampons, how to make use of the ice axe, etc. I felt well prepared to get to the summit after this. After that we had dinner and went to bed, as you have to wake up at midnight to start climbing the summit (the food/snacks we got provided with were good). We started walking around 1-1.30 am. Pedro (and the other guide who came with us) were patient when we needed breaks, but at the same time he tried to push us a little and therefore gave us the confidence to make it to the top. I'm not going to lie, the climb is not easy at all, not very technical, only one part you have to climb in the ice, but the altitude makes it very hard. But it's very rewarding, definitely my best experience in South America so far. If you're in La Paz and want to climb huyana potosi, I can only recommend to do it with Pedro and Bolivia Mounteneering! Thanks!

This retreat takes place in most sacred and beautiful sites in both Bolivian Andes and Jungle. Welcome to come to BOLIVIA, the best kept secret of south America, where something very special and sacred has been developing and coming to fruition under the radar for the last 30 years under the tuition of the Sacha Runa Healing Community working for more than 30 years integrating many spiritual traditions to bring humanity together as ONE, serving with Respect, Love, Devotion, Surrender and helping people safely but powerfully connect to the Divine Light and their inner truth, manifest their potential and fulfill their destiny as beacons of Light working for the benefit of all sentient beings.  In 2006, Miguel Kavlin, the founder of the Sacha Runa Healing Community had a revelation of the Condor and Eagle Prophecy manifest to him at the ceremonial Healing Chamber in the Bolivian Andes accompanied by the Divine Presence. It behooves all of us to embody this state of grace to Bless All

I have been at Sacha Runa for the last 2 months of a 3 month retreat. My journey started in the jungle retreat in Rurrenbaue (Ayahuasca ceremonies). Then to Allkamari (Ayahuasca & San Pedro ceremonies, Sun/Moon dance, sweat lodges and Island of the Sun, Sun temple pilgrimage) and now back to the Jungle retreat My motivation for coming to Sacha Runa was to continue healing deeply (which the plant medicines enable me to do and quicker than any other healing modality I have experienced). My time at Sacha Runa has enabled me to do this to a level I have not experienced before. I have had to face many challenges. Some that have literality brought me to my knees. Before coming to Sacha Runa I had attended around 40 Ayahuasca ceremonies with 6-7 different Sharman. During my time at Sacha Runa I have attended 18 ayahuasca ceremonies and 4 San Pedro ceremonies. I have found all these ceremonies to be very respectful towards the medicines and attendees. I have not personally experienced anything during the ceremonies that has given me any reason to feel concerned. While I have experienced immense healing during my time at Sacha Runa, to provide a balanced view, there have been some admin things that I have found frustrating eg: the water (which has now been resolved). Every time I have raised a concern it has been addressed. In regards to the unfortunate accident, when the accident occurred, it was made clear to us that the jungle retreat had finished and we were in our own time. We had 3-4 days before heading to the mountains to do what we wanted to do. I personally, in no way blame the management of Sacha Runs and don’t believe anything could of been done to prevent the accident. My heart goes out to her family. The blend of the jungle and mountains is magical. Both environments offer different energy and beauty. If you are looking for deep healing in a supportive environment, I can recommend Sacha Runa.
