Things to do in La Palma, Canary Islands: The Best Private Tours

October 10, 2021 Kandra Bartel

La Palma is a pristine paradise, set against a backdrop of volcanic landscape. Perhaps the best way to experience La Palma’s rugged beauty is a hike through the Caldera de Taburiente National Park or the narrow gorges of Los Tilos. The cool waters of natural swimming hole Charco Azul beckon on a steamy day. The dark sands of Playa Nueva are great for sunbathing and cat naps.

The Mirador del Roque de los Muchachos is the quintessential viewpoint of the Island and is located at the highest point of La Palma at 2,426 meters above sea level. The name of Roque de Los Muchachos comes from the shape of it, as they are a series of small roques about 3 meters high, which resemble a group of boys. From there you can see an impressive view of the National Park of La Caldera de Taburiente, where depending on the weather conditions it is possible to see the other three islands of the province (Tenerife, La Gomera and El Hierro).

Our hiking programs are designed to fully enjoy all this. La Palma has an excellent network of trails that run through impressive landscape scenarios. We did 4 hiking tours with this company. The pick ups from the hotel were very punctual. We were organised into groups by preferred language. We had three different guides and they were all knowledgeable about the island, geology, flora and fauna and astronomy. All were competent in at least two languages. The hikes were well paced and the descriptions of difficulty were we believed accurate. The guides were able to pace the walks to accommodate everyone, fast and slow. It was fantastic not to have to worry about transport to and from the walks as many are linear and from previous holidays we have sometimes found it hard to find taxis in out of the way places. Most walks ended with a drink in a bar and the opportunity to meet hikers from several countries. I will return to La Palma and will definitely contact this company. Only one suggestion. Please set up a branch in El Hierro.
