The shrines and temples of Kyoto offer a rare link between modern life in the city and its very ancient past. The Shimogamo Shrine dates to the 6th century and seems suspended in time, its serenity and spiritual power still palpable. Visit Fushimi Inari Shrine, then see the life-sized Thousand Armed Kannon statues of Sanjūsangen-dō. Enjoy traditional geisha performances, then savor a tranquil meal at a restaurant overlooking the Kamo River.

This is a great place to stroll down or sit and relax. Up the north end there were locals enjoying their weekend. Practicing dancing, gridiron and music. There are also turtle shaped stepping stones to cross the river which are super cute.

I used this river to run along whilst in Kyoto and it was brilliant. Nice and flat with a marker every half kilometre to keep on track. Loads of room for everyone and water fountains regularly along as well. Great for relaxing in the evening as well as it was always cooler by the river on a hot day.
