Overview Paravur Backwaters is one of the lesser known, tightly kept secret locations in southern Kerala. The Paravur Backwaters is safe and a sheltered waterbody, without much influence of the tidal effects. You can be assured of the safety as the depth of the lake in general is not more than 10 feet and not wider than 1 km. This ensures you don't paddle out and lose orientation in unknown waters. There are no motorboats in the waterbody to cause wake or noise pollution. Paravur Backwaters is part of the West Coast Canal System and connects it to the NW3 National Waterway between Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram. You will find it truly unique place to paddle as it is also the meeting point of sea water from Arabian Sea and freshwater from Ithikkara River. The paddling center is located on a tiny sandbar that sits between Arabian Sea and Paravur Backwaters with direct access to both waterbodies.
Inclusions: Private tour, Professional guide, TripAdvisor Experiences brokerage fee, GST (Goods and Services Tax)
Exclusions: Lunch, Hotel pickup, Hotel drop-off, Food and drinks, Transportation to/from attractions
In February 2020 we spent 3 brilliant days kayaking with KIK - a tailor made trip was made for 2 of us to us fulfil our desire for a real river adventure and time also exploring in the backwaters. Communication with Dani, the director of SyZyGy, before the trip and his willingness to be flexible in adding extra distance was GREAT and unique! (no one else I contacted was willing to take us for more than a few hours) The starting location was very easy for us to access . All equipment - canoes, paddles, dry bags were good quality and well maintained. Our guide Alun was easy going and flexible. Our first day of 27kms was a BIG challenge because of the heat (the hottest feb on record in Kerala!) but we made good time and had a very warm welcome to Munroe Island at Green Chromide - where Sunaiya and Vipin made us feel very welcome and at home. Their cottage sits at the riverside where the Kallada River splits into two and runs down through west channel and east channel making it an Island. Exploring the backwaters at sunrise was interesting and nice and shady. A welcome contrast to day one's scorcher! Lunch waiting at Green Chromide was delicious and that evening we were invited by Vipin to join him in visiting some ceremonies that were happening on Munroe Island. I would recommend hat, sunscreen, long sleeves and even gloves if you're light skinned and are planning to spend time on the water in India. The sun here is HOT! Dani is really clued up on kayaking and really happy to create bespoke kayak trips. I would recommend him and SyZyGy to anyone who wants to have a real adventure in the backwaters :)

Syzygy is by far the best place to enjoy kayaking and canoeing in the pristine backwaters in the Ashtamudi - Paravur area. I did a multi-day kayak expedition covering Ashtamudi, Paravur lake and nearby places. The location is absolutely stunning with swaying palms, small islands and sandbars, and mangroves. I suggest you dedicate at least 3 hours to visit the small island with a temple and the mangroves and also do a tour of Ashtamudi. They have kayaks of different types - all of superior quality and canoes too for group paddling. The charges are reasonable and you'll find them professional and caring. Be ready to adhere to basic rules like using a life-jacket and not polluting the surroundings. If you are anywhere near Ashtamudi, Varkala, Kovalam, Kollam or Paravur this kayak tour is a must. I am definitely going again and next time would stay in their tents.
