Things to do in Kansas, Kansas: The Best State Parks

April 7, 2022 Leonarda Pillsbury

See a buffalo up close, live like a cowboy for a day on a working cattle ranch or visit a stagecoach stop on the Sante Fe Trail are just a few of the many vacation experiences possible in this state in America’s heartland. You’ll love the wide-open spaces and the opportunities to engage in a variety of one-of-a-kind experiences in this marvelous state, which has the largest segment of true tallgrass prairie remaining in the U.S. Regardless of where you visit: a major metropolitan area like Kansas City, a college town like Manhattan or Lawrence or engaging places like Wichita, Dodge City and Salina, there are a wide array of attractions and sights nearby. If you want to familiarize yourself with cowboy culture, visit the Boot Hills Museum in Dodge City, dine on all-you-can-eat barbeque and hear songs of the American Cowboy at Diamond W Chuckwagon Supper in Wichita or explore the Dickinson County Heritage Center in Abilene, which has dance halls, gaming rooms and 32 saloons. For outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy hiking, biking, fishing, bird watching and other activities, three of the state’s most popular parks are: Cheney State Park near Wichita; Scott State Park near Scott City and Tuttle Creek State Park near Manhattan.

Me and my boyfriend's first time camping, we live in Wichita and we got there in less than 2 hours, we got an awesome spot to put up a tent, restrooms and showers weren't far. Beautiful relaxing views, lush and green. The areas looked clean and everyone around us were nice and considerate of their music volume. We had a walking trail near us, lots of noisy birds though but it's part of the scenery. I could had stayed a few extra nights.

Spur of the moment trip to check out the "clearest lake" and it did not disappoint. The water is clear and the lake was clean. We never saw any trash laying around so that was very nice. There are several areas to capture the scenery and if you are interested in camping, fishing, boating, hiking or biking, this lake is for you.

Elk City State Park

I grew up in Independence and have been a fan of Elk City State Park for many, many years. The name "Elk City" eludes me as the dam is just a few short miles from Independence. The Elk River dam on the Elk River has been a god send to thousands of people below the dam from preventing the flooding of their homes, property, and the destruction of fields and crops. That was the intent of building the reservoir. The by product of the dam is obviously a great opportunity of providing recreational opportunities. Elk City State Park is an excellent, and under utilized, playground for families and friends. The lake is beautiful and quite large. Boaters have miles of unimpeded stretches of throwing the accelerator wide open and "running down the lake" without much traffic. It's a great lake for skiers...and yes, fisherman. The lake has many cats, bass, crappie, bluegills, perch, and yes, even some walleye. The camping and RV areas are very well taken care of. The hiking around the area is incredible...from easy...to hard...to, "is this really Kansas!" The dam is is a structure between two very large hills. The hill on the the East side of the dam is called "Table Mound." Table Mound is a unique and very large limestone "hill." The terrain of Table Mound is very rugged. There are many trails on and around Table Mound. On the East side of Table Mound there is the haunted community of Le Hunt. Le Hunt was a small "Company Town" that was the home of a cement plant. The town Marshal was, the silent movie star, Tom Mix. Now overgrown by bushes and trees the cement plant and the community of Le Hunt are very worthy of exploring...you might even see a ghost or three (one being the dog of Tom Mix!). Do yourself a favor and discover a lake and and an area totally worthy and basically...undiscovered...Elk City State Park...just about three miles West of Independence...

Little Jerusalem Badlands State Park

Reviewed By kuyals - Hays, United States

This park is located about 25 miles south of Oakley on Highway 83 and then 5 miles west on a rock road. There is a $5 self-pay fee per vehicle at the park. There are two marked trails one is 1/4 mile and the other is just over a mile. Most of the trail is loose gravel, so good to wear appropriate shoes. I would guesstimate you are about 10 miles from the nearest tree, so best to go early morning or late evening and bring water. It is an interesting landscape so well-worth a visit. Monument Rocks are only about 15 miles north and east, so easy to visit both.
