Things to do in Jeju Island, Jeju Island: The Best Art Museums

April 3, 2022 Phylicia Berquist

Where else can you find an azalea-framed volcano to climb, a sisterhood of deep-divers, and ancient stone statues on which to make wishes? Jeju Island. A favorite with newlyweds (and K-drama fans), this popular retreat is also home to miles of golden beaches, winding coastal trails, and Jeju Waterworld, the area’s largest water park. No matter what your fancy, one thing is for certain: a day of sightseeing isn’t complete without enjoying some of the isle’s delicious raw seafood and famed barbecued black pork.

Bonte Museum

Reviewed By thelonious22

Bonte Museum was designed by Tadao Ando who designed scores of museums (including the Suntory Museum in Osaka) in Japan so the building itself is very photogenic. The complex is divided into five galleries with one of them permanently housing two works by Yayoi Kusama, Pumpkin and the Infinity Mirrored Room (each visitor gets two minutes inside). One gallery is dedicated to Tadao Ando’s meditation room while the rest of the artwork inside rotates. The other three galleries were pretty bland with one dedicated to Korean traditional crafts and the other two dedicated to temporary exhibitions. Each gallery is relatively small with the entire museum taking a little over an hour to check out. The spacious surrounding area is a nice spot to chill after checking out the art if the weather is nice and despite the steep admission, it was still a worthwhile stop.

Bunker de Lumieres

There is a secret bunker at on Jeju Island, which once housed old national communication facility and had remained unknown to the public for a long time. This large structure is covered with soil and trees, thus disguised to look like a mountain. This old national facility will be reborn as “Bunker de Lumieres”, a media art exhibition hall that will become Jeju's new landmark for culture and art.

Jeju Folk Village (Jeju Minsokchon)

Reviewed By aijako - Seoul, South Korea

I have been to many traditional folk villages in Korea, but this Jeju Folk Village is one of the most beautiful folk villages in Korea. If you are a fan of the Korean drama Dae Jang Geum also known as Jewel in the Palace, you should visit this folk village as it is one of the filming locations of that Korean drama. Also, I highly recommend renting a hanbok to take beautiful pictures by walking around the village. We had only 2 hours to explore, but it wasn’t enough to cover the whole folk village. Here you can experience a unique activity – to read comics and even play games on mini arcade machines in a traditional house.

Museum of African Art

Reviewed By Genovia7379

I visited the African Museum in Jeju Island. First, we could see the performances of people from Ghana. Traditional singing, dancing, and playing musical instruments created an exciting atmosphere. I could learn a little bit about their culture and tradition by listening to the explanation. In the African Museum, you can see sculptures and dolls of various animals living there. It was very fantnstic. It was also fun to take pictures together. If I visit Jeju Island again someday, I want to visit this place again.
