Although much of Jacksonville is urban, this sprawling northeastern Florida city also has nature and wildlife preserves, historic residential neighborhoods and lots of golf courses. Attractions in Jax, as the locals call it, range from art, science and history museums to a brewery tour, from the Jacksonville Landing entertainment complex, along the St. John's River, to Bronson Motor Speedway. The city's beaches offer soft sand and warm water perfect for swimming, surfing and kayaking.

We stopped at this wonderful State Park for a picnic lunch on our way to Amelia island. The beach was otherworldly. It was so beautiful. There was hardly anyone there so the isolation, the wind made the black rocks and the felt trees even more eerie. The trees are on their sides and they call it boneyard Beach because they are like big tree sculptures made of old trees that have fallen over and are dotting the beach everywhere. There's a very unique kind of rock that looks like lava but feels like clay under your feet. We walked for about 6 miles and relish the experience. It was a cross between the Galapagos and the big island in Hawaii right here in the mainland! Don't miss it. It's really a treasure in the state of Florida

Okay this has been a regular place for me to visit since I was a little girl. I have seen improvements over the years like the pathways at Kingsley Plantation being the recycled tires which are very easy on the feet and back for walking. There are plenty of benches scattered about and whether you are viewing the crops, the house or the salt marsh-it is beautiful. Due to the historical aspect of the island and plantation there is a complete history available, that may be hard for some to view-but is reasonably complete. Whether you want to commune with nature, exercise while communing with nature or learning a little history, birdwatching, or running the excess energy from the kids, there is something for everyone. Its an island, its Florida-protect yourself! From bugs (mosquitoes, gnats, no seeums, chiggers, spiders), sun, and a walking stick will help with uneven terrain, snakes, and other wild life. There are tortoise crossings, and bumpy roads-take it slow back there, enjoy the view and come out without a twisted axle and bent frame. At the Ribault clubhouse there are barbeque grills and picnic tables for those lucky enough to find them. Bathrooms are at the clubhouse and gift shop. There are no snack bars, vending machines available. The gift shop can arrange tours with a ranger-very informative. They also carry limited bug spray and bottles of water-remember to stay hydrated and there are recycle bins to keep our parks pretty.
