The official name of this square is Atatürk Square. This square, which is one of the most important and meeting areas of İzmir, can be called the Heart of Izmir. In the middle of this square, the historical Izmir Clock Tower stands; and there are important public buildings such as Yali Mosque, First Bullet Monument, City Hall and Government House around. Here, you can feed the birds and visit the Historical Kemeraltı Bazaar at the backside. During the summer period (2019), there was a renovation work on the Clock Tower in the square and it was surrounded.

I came here with a friend who lives in Izmir as part of a day’s site seeing. The imposing statue of Kemal Atatürk overlooks a massive public square and the ocean. My friend explained the significance of the statue and the liberation of Izmir from the occupying forces during WWI. I can see the cultural and historical importance of such a statue in a such a public space. It is very moving. Close by are many cafes and fine dining restaurants on the concourse also facing the ocean. There is also a very nice art gallery 5 minutes walk away that is about to have a great Picasso exhibition.
