Life on the Big Island is a little bit slower… and locals like it that way. The natural beauty and ecological features of the island are a draw for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. Test your chutzpah at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, home to the longest volcanic eruption in recorded history, or climb to the indescribably beautiful summit of Mauna Kea. At the end of the day, there’s nothing more refreshing than a quivering plate of fresh poke, followed by a fruity shave ice.

Such a leisurely way to spend a morning, driving over bridges and past waterfalls on Highway 19, north of Hilo, that gives you an authentic look at old Hawaii. Little towns, neat homes, incredible ocean views, and a few little shops along the way to help distract you from the natural beauty along the way. Highly recommend.

We needed a place in the area to waste an hour or so between tours. This little beach park was recommended to us and turned out to be the perfect spot to explore for an hour. We walked around the lava rocks and explore all of the little tide pools and found a hole in the rocks where the waves splashed up, it was beautiful. There's also a nice view of the volcano from the beach. I would definitely recommend stopping by if you have time.

About an hour and a half from Kona, but well worth it. Windy as heck, but cool to see the turbulent oceans meet at the southern point. The younger crowd were getting their thrills jumping off the cliffs, while locals were fishing from the cliff side. All in all, an active little area. Walk to the navigation tower and follow the brick wall into the ocean - that’s as southern as it gets. Loved this place.

Bikeshare is now in Kona! Grab a bike from one of our Alii Drive stations, ride and dock it at the same or any another station when you are done. Easy. To get started: Arrive at one of three bike kiosks now on Ali'i Drive and use a credit card to get a bike. $3.50 will get you to most popular destinations on Ali'i drive. Return it to any kiosk within the time you selected. That's it!
I live here in Hilo and have been riding these bikes for about three months. The bikes are regularly checked and in great shape, three gears that change smoothly. You can start by Hilo Bay, ride to downtown, park it at the Bikeshare Kiosk there, and then head to a cafe (once they've reopened). Then get on another bike and ride back. Or vice versa. There's a separate bike path, as well as one along the road. During the present (May 2020) pandemic, there's even a special offer for residents. Great way to enjoy the gorgeous scenery along the water in Hilo.
