History and monuments dot this landscape almost as often as the golden farmlands. Learn about America’s 31st president at the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum in West Branch. In northeast Iowa is the Effigy Mounds National Monument, a group of prehistoric American Indian burial and ceremonial mounds. This part of Iowa is also home to the Silos and Smokestacks National Heritage. The 37-county region tells the story of American agriculture, agribusiness and farm life and is affiliated with the National Park Service. In addition, there are five national wildlife refuges here. If you love history, imagine seeing the Amana Colonies, consisting of seven historic villages in 1855 by German immigrants as a religious communal society. Here you can also buy antiques, hand-woven baskets, furniture and clocks and locally made wine and beer. In Ames, take the family to see the Christian Petersen Art Museum, a newer structure that exhibits works of art by Christian Petersen and contemporary artists. You won’t want to miss the state capital of Des Moines, home to Blank Park Zoo with its naturalistic exhibits and more than 800 animals from five continents. You also should enjoy the Brenton Skating Plaza, an outdoor family entertainment venue.

Hansen’s Dairy is a family-owned on-farm creamery in Hudson, Iowa. The Hansen family has been farming the same land for more than 150 years. Since 2004, we have been making our own dairy products. We are truly farm to table! Hansen’s “legendairy” products include milk, cheese curds, butter, heavy cream and ice cream. We do agritourism to help our customers connect with their local food. If you're looking for something to do in Iowa, our dairy farm tour is educational and entertaining! Admission includes a trolley ride to the farm, then a walking tour to see our animals and facilities. All participants can feed a calf, milk a cow by hand, pet the kangaroos (yes, real kangaroos!) and goats, make homemade butter, sample our milk and cheese curds, and eat our premium, old-fashioned ice cream. Ages 4 and older, $15; ages 3 and younger, free. Tours begin at 3:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday, April 1-Oct. 31. Must have reservation. Book at https://hansendairy.com/farm-tours or call.
Wonderful people, history, and educational experience. Spent a night as a Harvest Host guest. Highly recommend the tour and of course the dairy products and fresh meat. It doesn’t get any more local then Hansen’s Dairy!

We are a family run apple orchard located in Jefferson, Iowa. From humble beginnings dating back to 1917, Deal's Orchard has grown to its present size of 45 acres, selling our produce in many central Iowa grocery stores. We have over 25 varieties of Iowa apples as well as tomatoes, sweet corn, pumpkins, holiday gift baskets, and plenty of other seasonal fruits and vegetables. In 1999 we planted our first crop of Scotch Pine trees and now have a wide selection of Christmas trees on our Tree Farm. In 2011 we started our newest adventure by becoming only one of two establishments in the state of Iowa to produce hard cider. All of our cider is pressed, fermented, and bottled at our orchard.

In summer we feature plants, fresh veggies, fruits, and Farm to Table Dinners. In Fall our 40 acres of pumpkins, squash and gourds turn our farm into a harvest haven along with two large play areas for families of all ages to enjoy, a 10 acre corn maze, wagon rides and special fall events. In November we transform into a winter wonderland featuring fresh cut trees, wreaths, roping, and gift items.
We were traveling on a Mississippi River cruise, and one of the excursions offered was to a dairy farm and Harvestville. The excursion featured a wooden wagon ride around the huge sunflower field which was in full bloom at the time. It was so beautiful that I took nearly 100 pictures ! This 5th generation family-owned farm also features a pumpkin patch and corn maze in autumn, a snack bar, picnic areas, and plenty of games and activities for children. The large barn gift shop is also worth a little browsing. Fresh produce is featured, as well as beautiful gift items. The displays are very appealing, and whoever styles the store's displays certainly knows how to inspire buying ! This appears to be a very popular destination for people from miles around, and it is certainly worth an hour or two of your time, particularly if you have kids. The family members who conduct the tours are super nice and friendly, which seems to be an Iowa trait.

Bloom and Bark LLC consists of owners Kim (the boss) and self-taught glass blower Tim Blair. Primarily, we blow glass, we sell glass and we love glass. Creating beautiful art from fire, gravity, and air is something that is inspiring to many, yet it is an ancient skill that few practice today. Tim creates in a complete Hot Shop working in his new Open Air Studio during the summer months. The glass blowing hot shop is located adjacent to the Local Artisan Market, housing an eclectic display of not only his work, but the work of various artist and their mediums all located within a 100 mile radius of Van Buren County. Bloom and Bark offers a unique option for anyone looking for a gift, a splash of color in their decor or an experience that will last a lifetime. Come join us on the farm!
Our family visited the studio and enjoyed a positive and fun demonstration of the science and art of glass blowing. The tools, the techniques and the mesmerizing molten glass kept us all interested and happy. We felt welcomed to the farm and enjoyed seeing all the unique and beautiful glass items. I would recommend this place to anyone visiting this area. It is an established small business that people should support and is a safe and welcoming place for people. Our children and my in laws enjoyed the entire experience and we all asked lots of questions. It was easy to contact them to find out the best time to stop by. Highly recommend! Did I mention we came home with some beautiful glassware? The hummingbird feeders are adorable and the ornaments are perfect souvenirs or gifts to remember this cool place! Thank you, it made our day!

This farm is famous for its Maytag Blue cheese.
Covid-19 has made a trip to anywhere outside my house just about impossible. So, how do I make the inside of my house into a destination? One way: After a wonderful dinner main course -- my wife is SO good -- I cut off from my two-pound wheel a spoke of Maytag blue cheese which I put on a cracker and consumed with a glass of Sauterne, THE French sweet dessert wine. The two go together SO well, I was encouraged to try another. I was beside myself. And since there were now two of me, PARTY TIME! Maytag blue is an American gem. The shipping is prompt and, frankly, the way the cheese is packed is itself an art form. My advice for this trip: Put the cheese on a plane and then on a truck that brings it to your home. Pandemic? Quarantine? OK. Pass the Maytag!.
