Things to do in Iasi, Northeast Romania: The Best Cultural Tours

April 6, 2022 Randal Brittian

The large city of Iasi has been a cultural and political hub since the 15th century. Everything orbits the Golden Plateau, bookended by the Palace of Culture and Union Square, and packed to the brim with churches and palaces galore. Iasi has significant Jewish history. The first Yiddish-language newspaper was published here, and the 17th-century Great Synagogue is the oldest surviving synagogue in Romania.

We booked a car with driver, for a trip to Kiev. A long trip, road not always the best, tough winter. We had a lot of worries and concerns, especially considering it was a new country for us. But from the very first contact, we were received with professionalism and care, helped in every single bureaucratic step, even the ones that would normally not be the agency's problem. We were guided through lab test for the custom, helped with insurance and all the information we needed to travel safely. When it came to the driver, we couldn't hope for better: a true gentleman, excellent driver, impeccable professional, who represented us with the custom authorities, provided information, supported us in our moments of tiredness, always ready to help. It is very rare to have professionalism and compassion combined together, yet this man, Mr. Paul Rotaru, is a perfect example. We felt safe and cared for. Professionalism at the highest level. Thank you.

Our first private tour and we were delighted with the experience. The tour was fast-paced, which was fine for us - be ready at 8 am. We saw so much more than if we would have tried it on our own. We were lucky to have a friendly guide, Michael. He was knowledgeable and entertaining, with excellent driving skills. Our plan of visiting Romania during COVID-19 end well, and I hope to discover more in the next years.

If you are looking for a way to spend your day hiking, pretty close to Iasi (approx. 3 hours driving) this is one of the best choice. And if you are going with Lucian as your tour guide your day will turn out to be amazing! I've took this tour on a October sunny Sunday with a group of 6 adventurous girls from Iasi. I've been interested for some time in Via Ferrata Astragalus route but didn't had the perfect companion to go through it. And Lucian helped me make my dream come true. He is the perfect person to go on this tour: he is very knowledgeable, passionate, experienced in escalating/hiking (or any other outdoor experience, for that matter), and a very pleasant company. The route offers a good combination of breathtaking scenery and adventure. Lucian is always there for you giving instructions and encouragements, if needed. After we accumulated some adrenaline from the first route we also tried the Via Ferrata W. Ferenc (perfect for pushing the limits, and getting out of your comfort zone). As a bonus, Lucian showed as a secret place from where we were able to observe chamois, which was also amazing. I totally recommend it!
