The Toyoma Chiho Railway was formed in 1943 when various lines around Toyama were merged together into the current (Private) Railway Company. Early one morning, I traveled from Dentetsu Toyama to Tateyama as the 1st leg of a journey on the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. Departing just before 08:00, the 'Double Decker Express' in use on the the Tateyama Line takes about 50-min to cover the 34km to Tateyama Station and the interchange with the Tateyama Cable Car. The unique feature of this 3-car scenic train is the two-deck passenger car (Car 2) located in the centre, previously in use on the Keihan Electric Railway around Osaka/Kyoto. Note that seats in Car 2 should be reserved in advance. As the train 'rattles and rolls' through the countryside before climbing towards Tateyama, it is performing the prologue to what was to be a magical journey on the Alpine Route.
