In a scenic location right next to a 12th century motte and bailey castle and with views over farmland and far into the mountains on the site of a medieval village lies this exquisite little church, also 12th century, with fabulous gargoyles and corbels inside and out that remain unrestored and in mint condition despite the years. There’s a freshness and innocence about the carvings despite at least one being somewhat risqué that is a great pleasure to see, even if like me you’re neither a church expert nor a history buff. The church is beautiful inside too, plain and simple with delightful quirky touches. Make a half day of it visiting the castle and eating at the great pub almost next door.

The bell tower at Yarpole is dated to around 1185 and is therefore one of the oldest intact wooden frame buildings in the U.K. Not as large as the one at Pembridge, it is older and similarly impressive. One of the seven churches in Hereford with a separate bell tower. Of clear historical importance. The door of the bell tower alone makes a visit a must - see it from the inside to be stunned.
