Had the pleasure of visiting the Helsinki University Library on a walking tour of the city, and it was the one stop I wish we could have spent more time to wander and soak in the amazing architecture. If I had a free afternoon, I would love to just settle in here and read or listen to music.

Senate Square

Reviewed By 490irinag - Illinois, United States

If you are interested in history, Senate Square and the whole area around it give you a strong perception and understanding of the history of Finland and of its cultural heritage. The square is enormous. Even the dominant Helsinki Cathedral can look somewhat small, if you are opposite it, standing afar on Senate Square. There's also a memorable statue of Alexander II there, and the square is beautifully surrounded by a range of famous historic buildings - Sederholm House, The Government Palace, The University of Helsinki. Senate Square was designed by a very famous, accomplished architect C.L.Engel in the middle of the 19th century. Being definitely a tourist attraction, Senate Square is a beautiful place to visit.

This neo-gothic palace near the Senate Square was completed in 1862. The interior is as stunning as the exterior. It is best seen during the concerts organized there.
