Waipi'o Valley

A scenic area of waterfalls and thousand foot cliffs.

You can drive a 4-wheel (though rentals might not let you) or hike down. But we took the Waipio Valley Shuttle down for a great tour of the valley. Surrounded by mountains with gorgeous rivers, taro farms, wild horses, and fruit trees all around, it is really something to see. A beautiful and unique area.

Halawa Valley

Situated on the eastern side of Molokai.

Road signs threatened a bad road, but it was fine! So glad we ventured to the end of the road and beautiful setting. Stop at all the wide spots and take in the views along the way. Drive to the very end of the road where there is a much bigger parking area (and picnic tables) than the first place you see where there are only a few spots to park. But do take some time in the old townsite of Halawa where there is an old church with trees now growing in it. great photo ops. The prettiest part of the drive is through the Ironwood forest, near the end of the road.

Pololu Valley Lookout

One of many scenic valleys on the Big Island of Hawaii.

Reviewed By tano14130831 - San Ramon, United States

Had to insist that we give this hike a try. The concierge at our hotel said it was her favorite. Took about an hour to drive from Waikoloa to the lookout point but there were cute little shops in little towns on the way. Parked at the top of the cliff and hiked down to the most beautiful, serene and breathtaking scenery on the Big Island. There were tree swings near the black sand beach, majestic mountains on one side and ocean on the other. Cows were grazing in a far-off field near a peaceful meadow. I’d say hiking down took longer than hiking back up but neither took too long. Amazing views as you traverse the path. Went near sunset so only a few other people there. I’d do this hike again in a second!

Nu’uanu Pali

The Nuuanu Pali State Wayside is a lookout above the Pali Highway tunnels where you’re treated to a panoramic view of Oahu's Windward side with sweeping views of Kaneohe, Kaneohe Bay and Kailua. It’s also well known for strong tradewinds, forming a natural wind tunnel of sorts. It was here in 1795 that Kamehameha The Great conquered the island of Oahu in one of the bloodiest battles in Hawaiian history. Led by Kalanikupule, the defenders of Oahu were driven back up into the valley where they were trapped above the cliff. More than 400 of Kalanikupule's soldiers were driven off the edge of the cliff to their deaths 1,000 feet below.

There are awesome views of Kaneohe Bay and the windward side of Oahu. You have to pay a small fee to park, but it is worth it. I highly recommend this stop!

Iao Valley

Reviewed By 129artk

The last part of our day was to explore the Iao Valley. It's towering peaks guard the lush valley floor of Iao Valley State Park. Located in Central Maui just west of Wailuku, this peaceful 4,000-acre, 10-mile long park is home to one of Maui's most recognizable landmarks, the 1,200-foot Iao Needle. This iconic green-mantled rock outcropping overlooks Iao stream and is an ideal attraction for easy hiking and sightseeing.I was looking forward to hiking the valley, but when we got there it was pouring. So we sat in the car and finished eating our fish tacos waiting for the rain to end. As it settle down to a drizzle, we put on our Mountain Jam ponchos that I had packed, since I had tremendous foresight knowing that we may encounter rain, being in a tropical environment. Interestingly enough, one of the trails in the Iao valley is considered one of the rainiest places on earth and there is a tremendous danger of flash floods.
