Smugglers Adventure

Deep in the heart of Hastings West Hill lies the Smugglers Adventure, acres of caverns that conceal the thrilling history of smugglers, bootleggers and warring bloodthirsty gangs.Visitors can explore the labyrinth of secret tunnels and passages and discover the dangers and hardships faced by Sussex smugglers in the eighteenth century.More than 70 life-size characters, interactive displays, eerie lighting and sound effects and dramatic recreations bring this mysterious and often bloody world vividly to life.

The Smugglers Adventure was an interesting way to find out about the history of the area. Mannequins and audio displays are set up which tell the history of smuggling in the area. It also gives some information about how this place was used in WW2 and some of the local ghostly presences. It's self guided and you can go at your own pace, with plenty of room for social distancing. The caves are dark but, with the lighting present, you'll have no trouble working out where you need to go next (and it would be difficult to get lost). There are some low ceilings to. I'm about 165cm and had to bend right over to get through one area. However, I'm also claustrophobic but wasn't bothered by that, in there.

The Amsterdam Shipwreck

Reviewed By 130secrets

If you are interested in history, shipwrecks or maritime history or just want to see something unusual then go and visit the wreck of the Amsterdam- when it's visible! You can only see the wreck at very low tides, a few times a year, which makes it all the more special. It's a good idea to do a bit of research about it before going so you will understand more what you are seeing. There is a lot of very interesting information about the Amsterdam atwhere else- the Shipwreck Museum, also in Hastings, an absolutely fascinating visit, ideally before visiting the Amsterdam wreck. You may be surprised about how small the ship looks, especially when you consider how many people would have lived on board the ship for months at a time. Please be aware that some of the sand can be very sticky and there are areas of 'sinking sand' which can be genuinely a bit alarming so be careful where you walk as you approach the wreck if not with a guided group.

Hastings Castle

The first castle built by William the Conqueror in 1067 now shows a 20-minute program called "The 1066 Story."

Reviewed By PhilSears - Dorking, United Kingdom

Parked on the seafront by the museums and fascinating local caught fish sales at the East end of town, close to the Old Town. Given personal treatment to take the three of us on the mini railway the short distance to the West Cliff Funicular Railway/Lift that speeds you up to the castle - again an 'on-demand' service. Fabulous views on arrival at the top and a short walk to the Castle ruins, past a series of story boards depicting the history. The ruins are well described on numerous fixed boards, though much of the original has been lost to the sea due to cliff erosion over the centuries. An ok charge for concessions and children, but not a huge amount to see, needing only an hour or so PLUS the stunning views over the town and coastline. 20 minutes after our arrival there was a showing of a very informative video in the small, basic, purpose built theatre. The dungeon store rooms were a bit underwhelming but included in the ticket price. An important piece of history, but don't expect the magnitude and magnificence of other south coast castles. A return to sea level via the funicular and lunch in an Old Town pub found in the narrow, interesting, streets.
