Halfpenny Pier

Ha'penny Pier is a Victorian wooden Pier. It's one of only a few remaining examples of working wooden piers in the UK and is owned and managed by Harwich Haven Authority.

When you stand on the pier you can see the huge container ships that frequent the port of Harwich along with all the yachts and fishing boats that frequent the estuary. There is also a nice eatery there and a small museum

I really enjoyed my wander around this vessel, it gives you a flavour for life aboard the vessel and the pirate radio exhibition takes me back to listening to AM radio in my youth. There's a great collection of equipment and vintage radios of all sizes and as an electronics engineer I enjoyed perusing the large collection of practical electronics, a magazine I used to read back in the day.

Beacon Hill Fort

Having a walk along the seafront we knew the fort was there and saw a sign with a pathway. We were greeted by a member of staff who gave us a map and a flashlight, quite exciting. There is so much history here and it was fascinating walking around the sites. I personally thought the graffiti added to the experience; it’s not all mindless scrawls. It gave it a sense of abandonment. Would recommend a visit and it’s free with only an optional donation towards further restoration works by an awesome volunteer team.
