We had arrived in Petersfield one late rainy night for a poetry gig. In the square was a statue of William 111 or "of Orange" as he was known. . King Billy is more famous for the Battle of the Boyne and how his memory is kept alive every year in the North of Ireland. William died in 1702 of pneumonia following a broken collar bone after a fall from his horse. Maybe this statue is that moment when pride came before a fall. Or the town has a good sense of irony. Now this cold sunny day we have come to visit The Petersfield Bookshop who are interested in local poet Richard Hawtree whose THE NIGHT I SPOKE IRISH IN SURREY we have just published. And yes this started as a visit but became an experience. The "Bookshop" gathered us in and we were at once enwrapped in its atmosphere...time stood still and we floated amongst its many tomes and intellectual bric-a-brac. It is a shop to fall in love with...to merely "like" doesn't do it justice. One can only LOVE a shop that dares to be this unique and have such character and sense of itself. It is eccentric and eclectic and enjoyably engaging. It is charming and enthusiastic in its approach to customers( bookloveras) and friendly beyond belief. The staff are suitably superb to match the manner of the bookshop. It is as if one stepped into a fairytale by mistake and breath in wonder instead of air. The shop expands in reality as it does in the imagination and one can wonder and wander from room to room. On one's journey from shelf to shelf one will encounter many bygone toys from a forgotten age of childhood as if one had entered the pages of an Angela Carter come alive. The Magic Toyshop indeed. There is a manakin stuck to the ceiling wearing an army green uniform. Another makakin hangs around in a corner wearing a nurse's uniform. Ahhh I see I have forgotten to mention the tiger and bear skins also attached to the ceiling...how tawdry of me. One, as one can see, has to look at once everywhere to take in a mysterious myriad of delights. There in a glass cabinet is an full scale replica of the F.A Cup that Pompey won back in the day beating favourite Wolves 4-1 in the "Gland Final" of '38/39( a reference to 'monkey gland' testosterone injections – used by both teams that season. See it was not only poet Willie Yeats got up to such shenanigans. The owner John Westwood came in as we were going out and he was a true blue Portsmouth fan dressed from the tip of his hat to the top of his toes in glorious Pompey colours and a fine metal belt proclaiming POMPEY. Not just a fan but a super Super Fan. There is a skeleton foot and a skeleton hand somewhere about. The sense are glutted with surprise after surprise. One can see what a mecca this was for local poet and booklover Richard Hawtree who must have to be pried loose from the beauty of the books to which he clung like a barnacle. Every month or so they run a Dead Poets Event in which they pursue the past away poet with live readings and discussions about his work. We had just missed( alas alas)a Keats but will make it to the Byron. This bookshop is a thing of beauty and a joy forever. We of Dempsey and Windle publishing the now alive and kicking poets of our generation were overwhelmed by this amazing 100 year old bookshop that had everything we could imagine and everything we couldn't imagine all in this one time and place. Our senses were overwhelmed and we reentered the world of now and time clicked on again much enriched by having experienced such a wonder. One of the questions Tripadvisor asked was if it were a good place to go on a honeymoon and if you are a lover of books then the answer is a resounding YES. And again YES YES as Molly Bloom would have so succinctly put it.

I love 'chance encounters of the antiques & collectables kind' when I least expect it..and stumbling across the old Delta Works , host to the Ancient & Modern Emporium, as I was making the very scenic drive up from Salisbury to Hungerford, offered such a find..! Located on the main Salisbury Road in the small village of Shipton Bellinger (beautiful name..sounds like an old Shakespearean 'actor-manager'), the old Delta Works in the location title was, I am led to believe, an old bottling plant once supplying soft drinks to the nearby army garrison just up the road at Tidworth... Then years later it became a well-known antiques & collectables auction house..and just recently has joined the swelling ranks of antiques Emporia ranged across the south of England that now play host to a number of professional & part-time dealers all operating under the one roof. Being a sucker for such places and the riches that I hope they may offer, the new Ancient & Modern (as it is now entitled) did not disappoint and I am glad I swung by on my hunting trip to Hungerford as, it not being very old as a specific Emporium, it is already bursting to the seams with myriad dealers offering all sorts of evocative & inviting collectables..: ...from 60s kitsch, to antique furniture, from vintage tools to garden-alia, from old ceramics & curios to 1950s & 60s toys, from the weird & the wonderful to (at present) a small amount of militaria, this really is a fascinating & enticing place to spend an hour or two just browsing and taking it all in... On the sunny July day I popped in, I got a very warm welcome from Heather, a lovely dealer who has a wonderfully varied pitch on the upstairs floor, and was made to feel most welcome and free to wander around at will.. and I certainly made the most of that invite..!. Some of these warehouse-style Emporia sadly lack a 'certain something' (quite often a lack of warmth in their welcome or a good, disparate-enough array of genuine collectables), however Ancient & Modern has seemingly attracted some enthusiastic dealers who seem to know their stuff and obviously enjoy what they do as their offerings are a fascinating & eclectic, (an overused word, but apt in this case) mix....and though militaria is actually my bag, I certainly enjoyed browsing the various pitches in this now well-laid out former warehouse. As mentioned, I believe this to be a relatively new conversion from dedicated Auction House to Collectables Emporium and the portents for its future are excellent judging by what I saw..and with a few spaces upstairs for some additional dealers to move in over the coming months, the myriad collectable genres being offered can only become even more varied & enticing I feel..! ..and talking of which, the great thing about The Delta Works site in this wee village is that it also boasts an additional offering in the shape of two more such outlets: one in the shape of De Rossi Antiques Emporium right next door..indeed one can walk from Ancient & Modern through an adjoining opening into what is another well appointed & laid out setting for dealers-various..whilst outside in the corner of the car park (in what I was told was the old Auction House office), is Mr Mercurial's Antiques & Curios.. So a planned or chance visit to this old Delta Works location will afford you three different hunting opportunities..'result', as they say!. All three little businesses are similarly friendly & most welcoming and certainly worth either a specific visit to Shipton Bellinger to take it all in.. or a great drop-in to peruse & buy if en route between Salisbury to the south & Tidworth/Hungerford to the north..though give Wednesday a miss as they are closed on that day of the week.. Looking forward to my next visit, thanks!!

A proper old school antiques and collectables shop. There is quite a focus on militaria, maritime and vintage toys but we try to cover as many areas as possible as the whim takes us. We are always buying from the public too at mutually fair prices. A lot of our stock is listed online and you can see it from links on the website.
The most interesting antique shop - I could spend days in that shop and still not have seen enough. It has everything from furniture, art, jewellery, antique toys, books, medals, weapons through to postcards.
