Chatauqua Peak is the Top of Mt William near Halle Gap. To get up there you have to climb rocks, only for very experienced hikers!
This is part of a most enjoyable, fairly short walk with the reward of great views from the top. Well worth the effort.

An easy walk from the centre of Halls Gap, with two different paths to choose from... one from within the camping section of the Caravan park, one thru the botanic gardens. We chose different each way. When you get to the end, there are several pools to paddle in, depending on seasonal rainfall. Great fun after a sunny walk.

The Grampians Peaks Trail is a memorable multi-day hike through the rugged interior of the Grampians National Park, beginning and ending at Halls Gap. Over three days, two nights and 36km, experience dramatic mountain peaks, rugged rocky outcrops, unforgettable panoramas and the ancient Aboriginal heritage of Gariwerd. Your first night's camping is on specially raised tent pads at Bugiga Hiker Camp. Enjoy awesome views from this campground built exclusively for the use of Grampians Peaks Trail hikers. Your second night's camp is at Borough Huts Campground, a popular spot close to Fyans Creek and Lake Bellfield. If you would prefer to do a two day, one night hike, you can arrange for a pick up from Borough Huts. The Grampians Peaks Trail is well signposted, but includes very steep sections and many obstacles. Only experienced and well-prepared walkers should attempt it. Please register your hike at Brambuk National Park and Cultural Centre and pick up an up to date map.

This is a terrific hike but at around 9kms it’s also a reasonably tough one as there’s a lot of uneven ground and you permanently seem to be either ascending or descending. We left from the car park opposite the swimming pool in Halls Gap and took the path on the left up to the Pinnacle. Although a little steep in places the path was easy to follow and the views and surroundings were fantastic. In the 90 mins or so it took us to reach the top we only encountered a handful of people. It seems most folks drive to the Wonderland car park and walk the 2.4km to the Pinnacle. Emerging from the trees as we reached the Pinnacle it suddenly became busy, with roughly 50 people scattered around the Pinnacle. No more calm and serenity. The Wonderland Loop takes you back via the Wonderland car park so you’ll share the path with many, many more people. The route back down is tough but beautiful with many different landscapes and terrain. It gets considerably quieter when you pass the car park and although there’s a few more ups and downs it’s generally a lot easier. Sadly the Grand Canyon Staircase was closed. A few things worth noting: to avoid the crowds at the Pinnacle and on the walk back down, I wish we’d left Halls Gap well before 9.30am. When you emerge from the trees near the top the path disappears so you need to keep an eye out for the yellow triangles on the rocks that tell you where to go - it’s not always obvious though and some of the triangles are missing or spaced out so it’s worth paying close attention. We met a few people who’d gone the wrong way. If you’re doing the entire loop, pack plenty of water, food and wear a hat - seems obvious but we didn’t ! Parks Victoria describe this hike as “not for the faint hearted” and “strenuous”. I tend to agree ! Awe inspiring views make it worthwhile though.
