The building of Guarda Cathedral was ordered during the reign of King John I, at the initiative of D. Vasco, Bishop of Lamego. Construction works began in 1390 but would only be completed in 1540, during the reign of King John III. Therefor the Cathedral became one of the most emblematic in Portugal with a structure which creates a symbiosis between Gothic and Manueline styles. The granite building stands out because of its fortified shape with its pinnacles and counterforts intercepting refined Manueline decorative elements. Inside, you should not miss the chance to contemplate the magnificent main retable made in ançã stone, a work carried out by João de Ruão’s workshop in Coimbra and a great example of ancient sculpture during the Late Renaissance period.
