This moving monument is a small but significant reminder of the brutal force of Nature. It commemorates the day on 6 February, 1938 when three huge waves suddenly rose without warning and swept into the sea several hundred swimmers. The lifesavers on duty quickly went into action and managed to save at least a hundred who were fighting for survival. Amazingly only five people lost their lives. The day came to be known as Black Sunday. The monument is only tiny and is easily missed by most walkers, unless you pay closer attention while going by. Worth looking for it if you are in the area, walking along this beautiful walkway.

We went to Kurnell to take a look at the new sculptures on the foreshore. As we were walking along we came across a love stone memorial with bench dedicated to Sir Joseph Banks. I remember learning about him in Primary School and wondered if they still do today. With Captain Cook’s Landing spot just nearby this is a lovely slice of history.
